Honesty

Trust and love: two sides of the same coin, you'd think.

Jack remembered a Time Agent, name of Rose, hanging from a balloon. Her colleague Mr Spock turned out to be a nameless alien Doctor. Who was supposed to be the con man in that scenario?

He told Estelle he was his own father. He told Jack he was James Harper. He couldn't tell them more: not without consequences. Truth, like so much else, was sacrificed for the future.

Ianto hid a Cyberwoman in the storage room.

He loved them so very much. What he longed for now was honesty.

*nods* The Torchwood crew aren't very good with the truth, are they? Any of them, but Jack especially.

Well observed. The trouble is: does Jack know for sure what honesty is any more? Or is everything he is still predicated on a fantasy?

I'm sure Jack understands the abstract quality of honesty rather well. But how he would answer that question - I don't know. It would be interesting to hear what he would say to it, and to know whether his reply would be truth, lie, or fantasy.

HONESTY, noun
1. Not the policy of the Torchwood Institute by order of HM Queen;
2. Trait absent from employees of said Institute, e.g. hiding of cyberised girlfriend in cellar; threatening to destroy Cardiff to get leg over; etc., etc.

And when the Torchwood team does use a little honesty, it's often inappropriate - like Toshiko telling Mary about Torchwood business, or Gwen telling Rhys about her affair with Owen, and then drugging him to make him forget. They just haven't got it right!
