I'm not always sure what people mean by 'nerd' any more; it's one of those vaguely overused words. But I saw this quiz on [livejournal.com profile] kikibug13's LJ and went for it. I don't know what all the other options were, but this was an easy guess. I don't suppose there's a 'history nerd' option. And they complete ignored us comic book nerds.

Many of the questions seemed geared for kids, but I did laugh at 'have you read more than sixty books in your life?' - as if that was many. I've read more than sixty books per year for many, many years. Many times I've read more than sixty books per month. This quiz was for wimps!

What Be Your Nerd Type?
Your Result: Literature Nerd

Does sitting by a nice cozy fire, with a cup of hot tea/chocolate, and a book you can read for hours even when your eyes grow red and dry and you look sort of scary sitting there with your insomniac appearance? Then you fit this category perfectly! You love the power of the written word and it's eloquence; and you may like to read/write poetry or novels. You contribute to the smart people of today's society, however you can probably be overly-critical of works.

It's okay. I understand.

Yep, I got the same thing. Ha! Sixty books! I know I've read nearly that this year already.

Well, I guess those who play sixty video games per month have an unrealistic notion of how many books people might read, if they were into reading.

No doubt. Eek! 7-12 hours a day? I have two siblings who are into Warcraft, but not like THAT.

And there is no such thing as "overly critical". It's not worth reading if it can't be dissected and analysed.

Not all books are created equal - uncritical reading would be pointless.

I got the Literature Nerd designation as well -- I guess the 60+ books is the tipping point. OTOH my science/math was just as stronger or even stronger. I thought the emphasis on questions re sewing/costumes was a bit odd. And as for the gaming/alignment stuff -- why did they combine it with computers? As you said, it was a funny sort of quiz.

Might have had something to do with it.

As you said, it was a funny sort of quiz.

Some of them just seem to miss the mark - as it they have some sort of assumption they don't question, or are too limited in their categories. There seems to be a belief that people who are heavily into mathematics and sciences don't read fiction - but that's simply not true. Look at my friend Lisa, with maths and engineering degrees, who reads as much as you do, and more than I.

I didn't like the way they assumed sewing=clothing. I spend an inordinate amount of time with needle and thread, but the results are quilts and cross-stitch/crochet/etc. The latter I've been doing since I was a small child, so the age thing is no excuse there. Besides, how many kids (which this quiz was obviously skewed towards -- 60+ *lifetime* books? Right) make Renaisssance costumes?

Anyway, I'm far more skewed towards literature nerd than you are, even (mmegaera.livejournal.com has my results if you're interested). But if they'd not tried to lump the needlework nerd in with the drama or anime nerds, the contest would have been a lot closer.

Yes, really, there should have been something wider about some of the categories - I'm heavily into theatre, but as a theatre-goer, not an actor, which wasn't given as a category. Just as well there was no consideration of comic books - !

I wonder how many kinds of nerd-dom we could come up with if we made a list?

I am a book nerd, a cat nerd, a needlework nerd, and a gardening nerd myself...

Well, I'm a Doctor Who nerd, and a fanfic nerd, and a history nerd, and a yoga nerd, and a literature nerd, and a comic book nerd - is that enough nerdishness for one lifetime? I could probably come up with a few more versions.
