Torchwood: Hopes for next series...
Mar. 15th, 2007 10:00 amThings I would like to see in Torchwood series two:
- More of Captain Jack. More of his past. More of his relationships with his Torchwood team, individually. More of his thoughts and commentaries on life. More of his ridiculous anecdotes of Lovers I Have Known.
- Better, tighter writing. Better plotting. More wit. More cohesion. Without or without losing the exploration of different genres.
- Fewer scenes and stories in which the action happens because one of the Torchwood team does something really stupid. Let them act like the experts they think they are.
- Somtehing about Torchwood Two or Torchwood Four.
- More sex scenes.
- Or, specifically, more kissing scenes, which the show does so well.
- The pterodactyl. Even if he's just screeching in the background.
- More locations.
- More focus individually on Toshiko and Ianto. I loved the action scenes Tosh got in series one: let her have more of them. Ianto as well - he's clever, he's got ingenuity, he's brave. Let's see more of that. Not to mention the Welsh vowels, the eyebrow motions, and the word-play.
- Less emphasis on Jack's immortality. Less use of his healing powers.
- More snippets of information about Jack's past in other places and other times.
- And let's see more Jack/Ianto flirtation. I don't really want to see more exploration of their relationship or what they mean to each other, because I want to leave this open to interpretation - but I would like to see something more of it.
- It's fun to see Gwen be empathic and intuitive and sweet, but I'd like to see her being smart - showing the intelligence that sometimes pops out by accident.
- More of Jack being flirty and/or snuggly, as in the gunroom scene in "Ghost Machine".
- Bilis.
- Detective Swanson.
- More aliens. How about a good alien, who's in trouble because of being trapped in our world? Bad aliens who need to be caught? And generally... if Torchwood is a tream of alien catchers, I'd like to see more alien-catching going on.
- More hints of Jack's connection with the Doctor. Perhaps even an oblique reference from Tosh or Ianto of having met or seen him, or just a sense of awareness, kept subtle. I like the connections between Torchwood and Doctor Who, especially when they are very subtle.
- More of the Jack/Gwen attraction, again, without damaging the relationship with Rhys, just keeping up a level of unresolved sexual tension.
- This makes it sound as if I want Gwen's relationship with Rhys to be all smooth and happy. Not at all. Things that mess up their relationship are just fine, as long as it doesn't fall apart.
- I'd like to see more of Jack's con-man skills in use.
- More time travel. More of the Torchwood crew falling into holes in time. The Edwardian era? The time of the Welsh/Enlish wars?
- Glimpses of PC Andy.
- More things or people coming through the rift - maybe a Roman soldier with his Celtic enemy? (It isn't just that I want to give Captain Jack a happy morning playing with an exuberant Roman. No, really.)
- More moments - and I'm not sure how to characterize this - more moments like Gwen's 'snogging' question in "Countricide", where the dialogue gives us interesting insights and twists on the characters.
There are a few things I really, really want to see but don't expect I will:
- A sexual/romantic relationship between Toshiko and Gwen - with accommodation for Gwen's relationship with Rhys.
- A sexual/romantic relationship between Jack and a woman. My pick for this relationship would be Detective Swanson, but that's just because I like her so much. A relationship between Jack and a female alien might be fun. I don't mean that I want the Jack/Ianto relationship to end, necessarily, but I'd like to see some tension in it, or see them work out a polyamorous situation. Jack can do this; he has before.
- The return of Yvonne from "Everything Changes". It could happen. She could be working with Swanson. I'd be very happy indeed.
- The departure of Owen, to be replaced with another interesting character I could enjoy more. Or perhaps still having Owen, but let him be regenerated or replaced by a body snatcher or something so another actor can play the role. I've watched enough to know that however Owen is developed - and I think he's been developed brilliantly - I will never really take to Burn Gorman and he will never produce for me that kind of 'bad boy aura' that Owen ought to have.
Things I do not want to see:
- Sex scenes with Owen. And you all know how I like sex scenes. Just... not with Owen.
- Episodes without Jack, or with minimal Jack.
- Abaddon or his ilk.
- Turning back time to restore the dead, or for any other reason.
- Buffy-like moments. Or any moments that emulate any other show too closely.
And though I don't think there's any chance of losing it, do you know what I really want to see again?
That greatcoat.

(Also, yes to more Tosh and Ianto--possibly together as friends because they seem to be in the same position where people don't seem to ask much about their lives. :\ )

Date: 2007-03-15 04:44 pm (UTC)Well... he's nicely complex, but I'm not sure he's well-rounded. I don't see much balance there.
He's bad at relationships and ends up falling for someone who's even worse at them.
Interesting interpretation. I thought Diane was good with relationships - she just knew what she wanted, and that didn't include staying with Owen. I'll have to think about this idea.
And underneath all of that, he's a guy who wanted more than anything to be a doctor, realized his dream, was fired
Was he? is that canonical?
I think Burn does a good job of showing us the confusion and bitterness that can cause.
I can't fault his acting. It's excellent. I'd just rather not be watching him do it!

Date: 2007-03-16 01:42 am (UTC)First of all I want to see Jack naked, or close to it. JB made such a big deal about how the BBC put the kabosh on him being fully naked and not showing his ass on Doctor Who, you'd think we'd have seen more than just a five second blip of him shirtless. Yes I know this is shallow.
And can we please not have any more Owen sex scenes? Had my fill thanks.
I want more Tosh/Jack scenes. Come on, Jack needs someone to talk about the Doctor with. And unlike his little confidant Gwen, she's actually met him.
I also want more Ianto. Nuff said there.
I'd also like to see Margret the Slitheen come back. Sorry but I somehow think the Doctor's "nurture over nature" experiment is bound to bite either him or Jack in the butt big time. So I say let it be Jack. It'd be more fun that way.
I also wouldn't mind Bilis coming back. Let him be a recurring villian.
Oh, and when Jack gets back from his travels could we get a Tardis sighting, or better yet could we see the Doctor's red Converses. Wouldn't even have to be David Tennant's feet, though that would be nice.
That completes my wish list I think.

Yes, really, enough.
I want more Tosh/Jack scenes. Come on, Jack needs someone to talk about the Doctor with.
Good point. I would certainly like that. I like the way Tosh and Jack interact; she's less pushy in her curiosity than Gwen, and seems to genuinely like him.
I'd also like to see Margret the Slitheen come back.
What a great idea! I'd like that.
I also wouldn't mind Bilis coming back. Let him be a recurring villian.
He was intriguing, and with his motives still totally unknown - is there any reason for him to give up now? Whatever it was he wanted out of his deal with Abaddon? I also like it that he's a time-traveller, which brings the story (and Jack) back to the time travel themes that I like.
better yet could we see the Doctor's red Converses.
Ooooh yes. Be still my heart.
I like your list.

Date: 2007-03-16 02:22 am (UTC)With the Tosh/Jack/Doctor/Gwen thing, it's really odd how he confided in Gwen about it and not Tosh. You can't tell me Jack doesn't know Tosh met the Doctor.
Oh, I just had another thought. Tosh was in the first of the Sltheen eps.

Date: 2007-03-16 03:10 am (UTC)I would guess that's why he hired her. And that he hired Ianto because Ianto was at the Battle of Canary Wharf. It's just a guess, of course, but it fits the right pattern.
Tosh was in the first of the Sltheen eps.
Ties together nicely, doesn't it?

Date: 2007-03-17 05:43 pm (UTC)Making me feel the urge to rush you care-packages of the "good bits" scenes.... But CBC will be airing Torchwood later this year, I'm happy to say. And series three of Doctor Who, which will feature him as well.
here's a link about stars who are not cirucmsised
Now, that is useful research!
a meta on writing sex scenes with intact men
That too! Thank you.

Date: 2007-03-25 10:12 am (UTC)Kate Winslet.
I know it's not very likely (though odder things have happened, and she did do a show for Russell years ago, so it's not the strangest idea in the world).
And I know what I want her to do - I want her to be a love interest for Jack a la Reinette (maybe not necessarily die or anything, mind you) for Ten, or maybe kind of Owen/Diane-esque.
I have this strange, as yet unwritten, obsession with pairing up Kate Winslet film characters with Jack (it started when I realised that Kate and Leo's Titanic characters were also Jack and Rose, then went on to a couple of others). And I would seriously adore to see this happen.
I also do wonder if Jack's name being Jack was a total coincidence now - Russell did make a couple of Titanic references in Queer As Folk after all.
Other than that I do agree with you on the hopes for S2.
