Not the weather. They've been promising temperatures above zero all week, and did we get any? If we did, I didn't see it. What I experienced, in my brief excursion to Von's for brunch with my slash-fan friends, was ghastly freezing rain and cold temperatures.

It was a lovely breakfast: I had "three-cheese omelet". Talked with [livejournal.com profile] josanpq about Karin Lowachee and other matters. Went back to my place, and [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen gave me a present so beautiful I am at a loss for words to describe it. (Perhaps I can take a picture.) It's a piece of needlework so intricate that it's breathtaking, a depiction of ancient Egyptian gods in blue and gold and green. I hung it above my Egyptian fountain.

Then we watched four episodes of Doctor Who: "Rose", then the first few minutes of "Aliens of London", then "The Empty Child", "The Doctor Dances" - [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen let me choose, so I chose my favourites - and then "Boom Town". [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi joined us for part of it, and so did [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, briefly. [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen said she enjoyed it, and that she had expected to - good! - and to my delight, she loved and appreciated Nine from the beginning. As well she might. I think I love him more every time I watch series one. Tough [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi said pointedly that she 'wasn't a convert' she seemed to be enjoying herself too, and getting the jokes. I consider that progress!

I love "Boom Town" for many reasons. I love its insight into the relationship between Rose and Mickey; for the way it shows Captain Jack at his very happiest; for the happiness and solidarity between Jack, Rose, and the Doctor; for the wonderful concept of the Doctor taking his enemy out to dinner; and for the unqualified wit of the script. And, you guessed it, for the slashiness.

Later on, I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and Sarah, and we watched two episodes of Firefly, "Shindig" and "Safe". What a wonderful show that is; it doesn't get stale after innumerous viewings. What brilliant characters, not excluding Badger and random walk-on incidentals.

Then I did some writing and reading.

What a great day.

I've seen a lot of people complain about Boom Town but I too love it for the same reason you do, they're happy (except for Mickey, of course) and that's not something you get a lot of with the Ninth Doctor. Yay for the converting.

And happy in exactly the right kind of way - high on each other's company. And then united against Margaret, but not vindictive, just... effective. Even when she tries to play on their sympathies, all the while showing that she doesn't understand them in the least.

There are also such lovely details: the restaurants of Cardiff, the fact that Jack goes around with handcuffs in his pockets - does he still? - Jack's love of the TARDIS mechanics and the pandimensional surfboard.... well, there's just too much I like.

I even love, I confess, Mickey's unhappiness, and Rose's attitude to it and to him.

Yay for the converting.

I'm just so happy to have friends who are willing to watch this stuff with me.

I'm so glad you liked it! And you have definitely made a convert of me.

Well - shall we find another time for a Doctor Who session? I would enjoy it! You've only seen 1/3 of series one.

I'd like that.

Maybe the weekend after next? Or the one after that?

We don't need to do four at a time, either, if you're short of time.

The weekend after next? How's Saturday the 24th?

Possible if we keep it early - there's an apa collation that evening. But early in the day would be all right.
