I got this from [livejournal.com profile] vervassal: Choose twelve characters from your fandoms, then answer the questions about them. Do not look at the questions before you make the list.

I picked twelve different characters from twelve different fandoms. I see one of her picks was the same as one of mine.

1. Captain Jack Harkness (from Torchwood)
2. Francis Crawford of Lymond (from the novels of Dorothy Dunnett)
3. Captain Cairo Azarcon (from the novels of Karin Lowachee)
4. Gambit (Remy Lebeau) (X-Men)
5. The Doctor (Nine) (Doctor Who)
6. Count Aral Vorkosigan (the novels of Lois McMaster Bujold)
7. Logan Echolls (Veronica Mars)
8. Methos (Highlander)
9. Bodie (The Professionals)
10. Lex Luthor (Smallville - not the DC comics version)
11. Klaus von dem Eberbach (From Eroica With Love)
12. Nick Fury (Marvel Comics)

So, on to the questions:

1. Who would make a better college professor, 6 or 11? What subjects would they teach?
[6. Count Aral Vorkosigan, 11. Klaus von dem Eberbach] Aral, without question. He is an intelligent, reasoned leader of men who teaches well and has a great deal of gravitas and respect for knowledge. Klaus is a tough commander, but a loose cannon, both hyperactive and temperamental. He would drive students crazy (or to suicide) in a day.

2. Do you think 4 is hot? How hot?
[Gambit] Yes, absolutely. Very hot. Gambit's cute, flirtatious, smart, nonconventional, flexible, acrobatic, and has a sexy Cajun accent. He's as hot as they come.

3. 12 sends 8 on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?
[12. Nick Fury, 8. Methos] It would be a S.H.I.E.L.D. matter involving long-term deep undercover. The only obstacle would be that Nick Fury would have to persuade Methos it was worth doing, and necessary - Methos wouldn't take on a mission for abstract reasons or duty to any authority or organization, and he wouldn't take risks to his own skin, but he would do something he felt was important. Perhaps to learn something; perhaps to teach something. Methos would, of course, succeed, but no one would trust him to carry out the mission, least of all Colonel Nick Fury, until suddently the mission would be accomplished, Methos would be smug, and then he'd disappear.

4. What is or would be 9's favorite book?
[9. Bodie] SAS Survival Manual. Actually he'd really enjoy the classics, and good novels, and poetry, and drama, but he wouldn't want anyone to know about it. He has a tough image to maintain.

5. Would it make more sense for 2 to swear fealty to 6, or the other way around?
[2. Francis Crawford of Lymond, 6. Count Aral Vorkosigan] Aral outranks Lymond, which is a good trick, considering that Lymond has both aristocratic birth (but lives as a second son) and high military rank (Marshal of France). Aral however is a Barrayaran Count in his own right, and a Regent and a Prime Minister, and an Admiral, and a Governor.... Aral has the edge. And I would like to think Lymond would think Aral a worthy man to swear fealty to, and he would do it faithfully. I think Lymond is much more likely to willingly swear fealty to Aral than the other way around: Aral would be slow to trust Lymond. But if Lymond managed to earn his trust, he would have it unreservedly.

6. For some reason, 5 is looking for a roommate. Should s/he share a studio apartment with 9 or with 10?
[5. The Ninth Doctor, 9. Bodie, 10.Lex Luthor] Interesting, interesting question. I am tempted to rephrase: which would be the better Companion on the TARDIS? Bodie would perhaps annoy the Doctor no end, but he would be loyal and helpful. Lex Luthor, on the other hand, would be a psychological problem the Doctor could take in hand, and he would be fascinated by the universe of wonders the Doctor could teach him and show him. The Doctor could redeem Lex, give him a valid purpose in life, a sense of self, a trust and respect for himself and others. Yes, I think the Doctor should choose Lex Luthor - it would be the making of him.

7. 2, 7 and 12 have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
[2. Lymond, 7. Logan Echolls, 12. Nick Fury] Ack! They would go to a fancy French restaurant in... um... New York, and they would discuss philosophy and music. There would be much wit thrown about, and duelling quotations from Lymond and Logan - Lymond would win, but not by as wide a margin as usual. (Logan would be dazzled, but would hide it - a sort of cynical modern American Will Scott.) Nick Fury wouldn't even try to join in the intellectual games, but he'd add a few zingers of his own (surprising and impressing his companions, though they would say nothing about it) and the talk would turn to war stories, history, and current military events. Fury would pick the brains of Lymond and Logan on off-the-wall tactics and stragegy. They would all have a terrific time. At the end of the evening, only Logan would be drunk.

8. 3 challenges 10 to a duel. What happens?
[3. Captain Cairo Azarcon, 10. Lex Luthor] Woo - interesting call. It would be a duel with swords, of course. Lex would think he has the upper hand because he's an expert fencer, but compared to Cairo he's an effete spoiled rich boy, and he'd go down. Cairo wouldn't kill him. He'd kidnap him and take him on the Macedon, make a soldier of him, and use his brains against the pirates.

9. If 1 stole 8's most precious possession, how would 8 get it back?
[1. Captain Jack Harkness, 8. Methos] I don't think Methos is much of a man for possessions. He has his sword and his journals. Is it even possible to steal an Immortal's sword, in the world of Highlander? I would suspect not.

Jack might want the information in the journals, and might steal one. First he'd use his intergalactic con man charm, but Methos would milk him for all he's worth and not give up a thing - it would be a rock meeting a hard place, two expert con men going head to head. So if by whatever means - almost certainly including sexual seduction - Jack manages to steal the journals.... Methos would steal them back and disappear with them, possibly taking something Jack treasures as a token revenge. (Or not. After all, what could Methos possibly do with a severed hand?)

10. What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 and 1 to work together?
[1. Captain Jack Harkness, 4. Gambit] Jack needs something stolen that he can't conveniently steal himself, so he hires Gambit to steal it. No real challenge there. Say, if Methos had stolen a certain hand for the sake of revenge, he might hire Gambit to recover it....

12. If 7 visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
[7. Logan Echolls] Shamelessly, I would pretend to be Kendall Casablancas, and set to work debauching the tender youth. Perhaps I shouldn't admit this. I think Logan and I would get along just fine.

13. If you could command 3 to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?
[3. Captain Cairo Azarcon] A task - ? I can't see Cairo Azarcon following any agenda but his own for any reason, but I suppose he would do a favour for a friend. I think I'd ask him to introduce me to Niko, to Warboy, to let me visit his ship, to get a glimpse of alien culture.

14. If 2 had to choose sides between 4 and 5, which would it be?
[2. Francis Crawford of Lymond, 4. Gambit, 5. The Ninth Doctor] Depends. On the face of it, if the highly honourable Lymond had to choose sides between an unfathomably wise alien and a street-smart mutant thief, I can't think of obvious reasons for him not to choose the Doctor. Unless he had somehow taken Gambit under his protection, as he once did Robin Stewart. Unless he felt a sort of human solidarity - no, wait, Gambit isn't human.... Unless he'd simply befriended Gambit and felt loyal. Lymond being Lymond, he'd find a third alternative - he'd pull some undetected trick that would end up with Gambit and the Doctor taking the same side, as they should have all along.

15. What would 5 most likely be arrested for?
[5. The Ninth Doctor] Well, if it were an arrest on Earth, it could be any number of things - espionage, trespass, being an illegal alien in any jurisdiction imaginable, kidnapping of young innocents like Rose Tyler, blowing up department stores. If it were an arrest elsewhere, it could be for the genocide of species, were there any power that could take the Doctor to account for the extinction of the Daleks and the Time Lords. I suspect a good intergalactic lawyer could get him off on a technicality - after all, it was Rose who exterminated the last Daleks in the long run, and once the timeline of the Time Lords was extinguished, we get a temporal paradox that exculpates the Doctor entirely: if they never existed in any surviving universe, what universe can administer justice?

This train of thought is starting to make my head hurt.

Or someone could just arrest the Doctor for breaking all the laws of relativity and history. "Who am I to argue with history?" - "Usually the first in line."

16. What is 6's secret?
[6. Count Aral Vorkosigan] That he killed Prince Serg and destroyed the Komarr invasion fleet on the orders of Emperor Ezar. That question is way too easy.

Are those all the questions? I was just starting to get into it.

I suppose I could do it again, mixing up all the numbers.

Why did the 8 cross the road?

Which came first, the 7 or the 12?

If 1 ended up as 4's slave, what would happen?

What musical instument would 2 play?

Under what circumstances could 11 be persuaded to blow up a planet?

If 3 and 5 were trapped in a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, which would be the princess?

What do you get if you multiply 6 by 9?

How does 10 feel about cloning, and what's s/he going to do with the miniature versions of 8 and 5 who have been foisted on him?

Why did the 8 cross the road?

Methos. He'd cross the road to avoid meeting another Immortal, who might want his head.

Which came first, the 7 or the 12?

7 (Logan Echolls) would come first, being young, excitable, and inexperienced, compared to 12 (Nick Fury), who is old, strong, and has a lot of stamina and self-control.

If 1 ended up as 4's slave, what would happen?

If Captain Jack Harkness became Gambit's slave, a lot of sex would ensue, and a fair amount of theft, fraud, and two outrageous men having fun with the world.

What musical instrument would 2 play?

Lymond plays virginals, organ, lute... Particularly lute. Bagpipes. Just about every musical instrument that invented in or before the 1540s. Music is his thing. (Along with warfare and mathematics.)

Under what circumstances could 11 be persuaded to blow up a planet?

If the planet pissed off Klaus, it would gone: nuclear detonation in seconds. NATO shows no mercy.

If 3 and 5 were trapped in a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, which would be the princess?

Captain Cairo Azarcon and The Ninth Doctor. Hmm. Cairo would be the Prince, and Nine the Princess, though it could go either way. In fact I would go so far as to say neither one would care which had which role.

What do you get if you multiply 6 by 9?

54.

How does 10 feel about cloning, and what's s/he going to do with the miniature versions of 8 and 5 who have been foisted on him?

Lex Luthor loves cloning, he's been trying cloning experiments for years, practically drooling over the idea of having clones he can manipulate and sue. (In some universes he has succeeded in creating a clone-offspring whose other parent is Superman, but that's another story, no doubt undergoing retcon even as we speak. Uh... that's DC-type retcon, not Torchwood-type retcon. But I digress.)

Miniature versions of Methos and the Doctor would suit Lex fine: he loves intelligence and would try to put it to use. But Methos would lounge around the mansion being snarky and vaguely uncooperative, playing with the foils and the swords and reading all Lex's books, and the Doctor would mount a moral revolution, destroy his empire, and then disappear to another time, so it wouldn't do Lex much good in the end.

*grin* That was fun! Loved your answer to the last one.
And Klaus blowing up a planet is all too plausible :D

Thanks -- I filled this one out, thanks to you. :-) But where was question #11?

it "went missing" like Torchwood 4?

Thank you... I did that too. Although I got really strange situations with 1 Miles Vorkosigan, 4. Cordelia, and 8. Aral. Especially questions #9 and 10.

And the third of the additional questions... Miles as Cordelia's slave?! Cordelia and slaves? (well, the other way around makes more sense. Cordelia has, in a way, been Miles's slave since about the time he was conceived)

*grin* That was fun!

It was, wasn't it?

Klaus blowing up a planet is all too plausible :D

Patience is not his strong suit, and frankly, I think he'd love to have a good excuse to blow up a planet. Any planet. He is a blown-up-planet just waiting to happen. I wonder if he had anything to do with the destruction of Krypton.

In fact, blowing up planets is a fine metaphor for Klaus' whole life.

Question #11 must have been stolen by Gambit. Or maybe it fell into a rift in space and time. Possibly Nick Fury appropriated it for a covert SHIELD operation, or Klaus von dem Eberback tore it up in a moment of anger.

Yes, that must be it!

Hee. This is one reason I carefully chose characters from 12 different and distinct fandoms. It's complicated enough!

Miles as Cordelia's slave?!

An interesting notion - but wouldn't he already do whatever she wanted? On his own terms, of course. (Maybe not 'keep himself safe'.) It's a sort of moot point because Cordelia would simply emancipate whatever slaves she encountered and teach them about gender and social equality and the implications of free will. They would be dazzled, or resentful, or both.

Yep, that's what I meant. *grins*

I don't know twelve fandoms well enough :-/ So, I doubled and tripled.

It might be fun to do the same (or a similar) exercise with 12 characters from the same fandom. Of course some fandoms don't have 12 characters - Torchwood doesn't have 12 recurring characters, for example, unless you throw in Weevils. But with X-Men or hte Vorkosigan books it would be easy.

Hmm. Not bad. Lisa is a bit of a stretch - she's only alive (or partially alive) in "Cyberwoman", and a vision in "End of Days". The pterodactyl has no lines - and neither does Janet - but that's a technicality.

Suzie of course is dead, but that never stops her, does it?

I suppose I'd be willing to consider the hand ...
