After three weeks of feeling sick and too tired to function normally, I woke up today feeling all right. Still coughing a little - but with normal energy. Don't ask about yesterday. Yesterday was a write-off. I've been looking forward to today ever since we planned a fannish day, and I was a little afraid I'd still be feeling too ill to enjoy it. Not so: I had a wonderful time.

This morning we met at 10 a.m. Von's on Bank St. for brunch - which was lovely. Me, [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi, [livejournal.com profile] chinae, [livejournal.com profile] josanpq and [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen. I had the Pacific Benedict with smoked salmon; delicious, and with great potatoes. And for juice a cranberry/orange combination. Lovely.

After brunch, we went to [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's place for a fannish glut of "stuff we're currently watching", viewed on her beautiful big screen. Each of us brought DVDs of shows we love. We watched the following:
  • From [livejournal.com profile] maaseru - an episode of The Dog Whisperer with a dog named Boyfriend, then an episode of South Park that was based on the Dog Whisperer, and very funny.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen: Due South, episode "Mojo Rising". I've always liked Due South and I've always liked both Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie, but I've never seen one of the fourth season episodes before. I was not a faithful watcher of the show, obviously ... I think it's too much comedy for my tastes, much as I do enjoy it. Well, this episode was a delight.

  • From me: Torchwood, episode 1.12, "Captain Jack Harkness". It went over well with this crowd, especially when it came to the dancing scene and the kissing scene. Could you hear the screams from wherever you are? My friends were suitably impressed with Captain Jack Harkness and his beautiful eyes and hands - as they should be. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this again. (Anyone surprised at that? No?) Sadly, only one of the music vids I'd brought would play on [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's equipment. So it goes.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi: first, a yaoi series whose name I didn't write down, about two cute guys in love, very competitive about it, at odds over who'll be on top, and going to a country bath house where they play table tennis; then, Haru wo Daiteita, about two actors in gay porn, whose personal lives and professional lives keep clashing; and then Loveless, about mystical warriors and their companions/lovers. I got bored with Haru wo Daiteita - I find it hard to watch anime for long at a sitting, possibly because I don't like having to concentrate on the subtitles. Of the three, I liked Loveless best, in which the art was alternately beautiful and... not so beautiful. Hmm.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] chinae, Supernatural, episode 2x01, "In My Time of Dying". Now, I've been very, very resistant to watching Supernatural, partly because I don't like horror, and partly because I've always thought the protagonists unattractive. As I suspected would happen, once I started watching, and got into the story, I didn't find them so unattractive any more. It was good. I wasn't unduly frightened, though I'm told this is one of the tamer episodes - promises it 'wasn't a scary one' turned out to be as hollow as I expected, and I'm sure other episodes would be way past my level of tolerance. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi pointed out that the demons weren't any scarier than the Dementors. Right. Does she really think the Dementors aren't scary? Sheesh.

And then, as a sort of bonus afterwards, I saw a friend of mine on SPACE channel's Hypaspace, which was fun. A comic of his has been reissued. Congratulations, Mark!

"Captain Jack Harkness"

It's ep 12. And I saw it for the first time today, too. Last night I was at a party and someone showed me the dance and the kiss. I was suitably impressed. And how romantic. *g* Just what I want from my slash -- even if it's cannon.

Oops, yes, of course, I knew that, I mispoke. Episode 8 is "They Keep Killing...", famous for the stopwatch scene between Jack and Ianto.

Yes, delightfully romantic. I love this fandom!

I suspect I will too. I'm starting at the beginning. I've watched 1 and 2 today as well. *g*

Hope you enjoyed! I'm tempted to say something stupidly fannish like "isn't Jack wonderful?" but ... well ... he is what he is. (g)

Glad you see it! I've been mad over him since his Doctor Who days, and he just gets better all the time.

I loved him in Dr. Who, but I really loved him in the last couple of eps I've seen. I'll be watching Torchwood all week!

Oh, yes. And where do I get the fic? I'd like to read Jack/Jack from ep 12. I found a couple. Maybe some gen to start with, I'm not sure who I'd put him with. *g*

Most of the fic has been Jack/Ianto slash, bu there's also Jack/Jack of course, and many other pairings. My favourite pairing is Jack/Doctor but I like Jack/Ianto and Jack/Jack too. Try looking on [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood (which is the biggest community, having just about everything - and [livejournal.com profile] jackxianto and [livejournal.com profile] galactic_conman for starters. Also [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_fic and [livejournal.com profile] torchwoodslash.

Also, the Doctor Who story archive has a whole section for Torchwood fic at http://www.whofic.com/categories.php?catid=16.

Oh, and forgot to mention, the community for slash and material specifically relating to the Jack/Jack pairing is at [livejournal.com profile] at_the_ritz.

Spreading the Torchwood love - good for you!

I resisted Supernatural for a long long time but eventually bought the boxset of season one and was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit derivative but the concentration on the brothers relationship takes it out of the humdrum. I don't love it, but it's better than a lot of stuff out there.

It means more friends I can watch with and that can only be a good thing.

Yes, good summation. The episode we saw was quite well written - not brilliant and original, but nicely paced, well plotted, and with strong characterization. It didn't win my heart, but it certainly won my respect. I might even make a point of watching again... if I could find the time. I've never in the whole of my life had so many current shows around that I thought were worthy of watching, and more: Torchwood, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, to name a few which have priority. And then there's Heroes, all the more interesting with Eccleston on the horizon...

Haru wo Daiteita seems to be anime version of the manga/graphic novel series Embracing Love. I didn't know if I'd like the series (the cvoer art seemed off-putting), but I do :-) A good example of manga where "the uke isn't girly', the guys are both about the same age.. and there's a plot! ":-)

Torchwood, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars

All those, and Rome too. Life is good. :)

PS So glad you're feeling better! ::hugs::

You're enjoying Rome? I saw the first few episodes of first season, got a little bored with it, and stopped watching, though I know there are good people in it. But I've been hearing good things about it (particularly from Mara!) and wonder if I should be trying to watch it too. But where could I find the time?

Thanks for the health wishes. ::hug back::
