I think it's entirely possible to enjoy art without knowing anything of the artist. If appreciation of a work requires intimate knowledge of the artist, then it's failed what, for me, is the key test of being able to stand on its own 2 feet.
Unfortunately, contemporary culture is in thrall to a kind of 'Age of Sensibility'/bastard Romanticism. It values 'feeling' above 'thinking'. I tend to think of Goya's phrase: The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.
