I find that that's part of the fun. Yes, it's great to hear about the obvious shared interests and fannish stuff, but it's sometimes even more fascinating to hear about new and different things, or to disover shared interests with people that you don't normally talk about.
And the joy of LJs is such that if it doesn't interest you, you just don't have to read it.
