From the Fannish Five for today:

What 5 characters would you like to go shopping with and what would you be shopping for?

This is a trick question because I don't much like to go shopping under any circumstances - except maybe one. The answer to the second part, then, is easy: we'd be shopping for Christmas presents.

And the people it would be fun to shop with would be the ones who liked quirky, unusual objects for imaginative (and sometimes practical) reasons. At first I thought I'd have to rule out men, because they aren't usually such good shoppers, then I remembered some men I've known (incuding my ex-husband) who were great shoppers, so that doesn't follow.

So, my list:
  1. Francis Crawford, from the Dorothy Dunnett novels. There'd be many digressions and diversions but they would all be stylish, funny, and interesting. And he would make a good deal and befriend the shopkeeper besides. Afternatively, if he was in magisterial mode, it would all be over in fifteen minutes and he'd have offended everyone in our path.

  2. Kaylee (from Firefly), because she'd love everything.

  3. Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan (from the Lois McMaster Bujold novels), because she would be enthusiastic, practical, and unusual in her responses to things. Come to think of it, accompanying Cordelia in the context of a shopping trip might be a dangerous idea. Hmm.

  4. Logan Echolls (from Veronica Mars) because of the clever, snide comments he'd make about things.

  5. LexLuthor (from Smallville) because he would be able to afford the most avant of the garde, the most artistic of art, and the really unusual devices. He would know the history of everything and even though his artistic eye isn't very good - well, it's downright odd - his viewpoint would be original. He too would have clever, snide remarks to make.

..... I have this mental image of Francis in a mall, now, at the edge of the food court, looking terribly offended by the base humanity before him. *giggles madly*

Well, I'm sure a food court could be quite basely offensive! But as Thady Boy, he might revel in it.

Ooh, I like your first three!

Lymond would be fun to shop with, as, I think, would be Philippa. Sock hats, anyone?

And better Lymond than his mother, unless you're partial to...ox feet, wasn't it?

accompanying Cordelia in the context of a shopping trip might be a dangerous idea.

Only if you've really pissed her off. *g*

Ooooh, what a vision.

I think I just invented a new game to amuse myself. "Interpose Francis and Real Life in Head, Watch Mayhem Ensue".

Malls. Convenience stores. Rock concerts. Strip clubs.

YES! OMG, STRIP CLUBS! *whimpers with joy and stares, pointing*

Or a casino. Or watching any modern movie - what do you think he'd like? or dislike?

At a rock concert?

At a stockholder's meeting?

At a rave?

Yeah. Now I wish I knew them all, so we could go shopping.

Philippa would be great to shop with, as would Kate. As for Lymond's mother... you'd end up holding all the parcels, and you'd have to talk her out of buying stuff. But everyone would have fun.

Only if you've really pissed her off. *g*

Well, I haven't kidnapped her embryonic son lately, so I guess I'd be okay.

...... the question is, would he charm every girl in the place (much to the annoyance of the other males), or start correcting their technique? ("No, lady, you swivel your hips like this... Gods, Donne was right: hope not for mind in women!")

*whimpers*

I did not need the image of Lymond in parachute pants.

Isn't it a lovely thought to play with?

Picture Lymond in Toys R Us. Or a really upscale fashion shop. Or an electronics store.

Lymond in parachute pants

LOL. That notion gives even me some trouble.

Lymond being Lymond, these things are not mutually exclusive. He'd probably join them on the stage.

With a glowstick necklace.

Excuse me, I'm going to go cry into my tea.

... and all the guys would pitch money at him, except for that one in the corner who secretly pretends to hate him but is really just jealous and madly in love.

Sounds right. And Lymond would flirt with everyone and have a great time, but would probably disappear suddenly before the end of the show without leaving his name.

Yes, it's just an astounding game to play. I really would like to know his opinion on a few modern environments!

With the carbon monoxide alarms going off in the office? With the crazy-ass patrons? With the books in the dumpster, the librarians forgetting the law, the bitching, the flashing of boobies in the backroom?

Hmm.

It would be interesting to speculate what he would like or not like in our culture. What would he think of television? Movies? The educational system? Music? The avenues for speculation are endless.
