LOST: Man of Science, Man of Faith
Sep. 21st, 2005 10:39 pmSo Jack is the man of the title - not so much a man of both science and faith, as a man torn between the two. Or did I misunderstand? Is he a man of science, trying to cling to his science and deny his faith?
I wonder what happened to his wife later.
My LOST supper party went well. We watched "Exodus 2" at about 7 p.m. - the last episode of last season, which
There was a fair amount of shrieking and face-covering and laughing and speculation.
My comments:
- Desmond: what the heck? We thought it was him (from the hair and the fitness) but couldn't sort out the sense. Many theories abounded: Cylons, clones, evil twins, leprechauns, ghosts.... Was Desmond in the hatch waiting for his relief? Or his boss/employer/leader?
- Not much Sayid. No Sawyer, with or without his shirt. Huh.
- If I were Shannon, I wouldn't be running around in the jungle in the dark after Vincent. She may think, or pretend to think, that no one ever asked her to do anything before, but we've seen several occasions where people asked her to do things. Boone asked her to help set up the camp when she was sunbathing. (She continued to sunbathe.) Sayid asked her to watch his suitcase in the airport. (She framed him with security.)
- Scary scene with Walt. Dripping.
- My friend were all laughing at Jack's hair in the flashback scenes but I thought he looked great.
- Why did Jack go down the hatch? Why did he change his mind? Was he feeling concerned about Kate? Was it that he decided to go for faith over reason, or was he just restless?
- We concluded that the big room with the geodesic dome in the underground complex is under water. That means the tunnel must be awfully long, though, if it's half a mile inland of the caves and the caves are inland from the beach. Still... I keep wondering why that cable leads from the beach into the water. The one Sayid tripped over in "Solitary".
- Why the old-fashioned computers and electronics? The old record player? The technology covered various decades .... I speculated it was one of the secret headquarters of U.N.C.L.E., with a jungle instead of a dry cleaning shop on top.
- is Jack central to something, or is it just chance that he ended up on the island? I liked his conversation with Hurley about the numbers.
- Did Charley take the heroin or not?

Date: 2005-09-22 11:30 am (UTC)I don't think any of them are there by chance. Not for one second.
And I think everything underground is old technology because its been there (with its occupant) for a very long time.

Date: 2005-09-22 12:04 pm (UTC)Desmond seems physical enough. But it might not be the same Desmond. I kept making Cylon jokes - that he's Number 13 or something.
Whatever the explanation is, it's not going to be anything mundane!

Like he's calling for help and there's something about the island that can take that energy and project it. And that's what she saw.
I don't know -- I'm just speculating and lord only knows where they're going to go with it. But as you say, it won't be anything mundane! Or, hey, it might be in the end, just to really fool us all *grins*

Date: 2005-09-22 02:44 pm (UTC)So is 108 really the significant number? Or is it simply a contraction or symbol for 4815162342? Or is it that 4815162342 has magical dangerous properties and should not be repeated or used? Hurley might think so....

Date: 2005-09-22 02:58 pm (UTC)To me, it all depends on if the numbers engraved on the hatch are the source of the numbers or just another case that proves the numbers are EVIL. If the hatch has the first instance of the numbers perhaps they are just a simple ID number for the make and model or location of the hatch and the creepy island mojo saw the numbers and turned them evil everywhere.
It looks to me like the guy has a lot of free time on his hands, so maybe the mural is an attempt to understand the numbers some way. He sees freaky stuff going on involving them and he tries to figure out why, so he tries to add them together. Maybe there's another mural where they're multiplied. Maybe he's been stationed here as part of some kind of scientific investigation about the numbers, where the island is the ground zero for number related weirdness and he's been locked up here until he figures it out.
And also... does his computer control the Island Monster? Or is he merely reporting his progress to some Evil Island Numbers headquarters?
I hope that this is diplomatic enough - I don't want to offend you

Date: 2005-09-23 02:16 am (UTC)Interesting point: are the numbers on the hatch a cause or a symptom? I'm guessing they're simply one instance of the numbers' use.... that its real significance is elsewhere. It does provide an interesting link.
Yes, I wonder what Desmond knows, or thinks he knows, about the island and his role there. He didn't look like a mutant mastermind. But then... how can we be sure what a mutant mastermind looks like?
I think he's reporting to someone, or some group. And I think he's as much their victim and pawn as our plane-crash survivors are.
