Sometimes the government does something right, and this is one of those times.

Through most of my lifetime, I've been utterly unhappy with the government of Ontario. It has almost always been Progressive Conservative and it's almost always pursued policies I dislike. Recently, they proposed to allow Ontario Muslims a certain level of self-government by allowing them to use Sharia law - a move opposed by feminist groups and anyone with any common sense.

Well: on Sunday, the premier announced that the deal was off, and not only that, but all previous such deals with Christian and Jewish any other religious groups was off too. The story is here.

Surely the point of Canadian law is that it applies to all Canadians equally? I'm heartily in favour of the separation of church and state.

I was happy to see the headlines. It's the only choice to make. It would be so wrong to allow the Sharia law to be used.

I'd say! I think the problem is that the reigious lobbies can be very powerful - just look at the power they have in the U.S. Anything we can do to prevent that is a step in the right direction.

Sharia law

Yes, I was too. I want to say "I don't know what they were thinking of" but of course, I do know what they were thinking of - and I'm glad they rethought the whole idea. Did you see the online poll about whether Sharia law should be used? Pollsters were overwhelmingly against it. Mind you, I don't approve of polls - except sometimes when I agree with them.
