The sin of the day was chocolate. First, mid-afternoon, suffering craving - I caved in and ate one of the President's Choice Chocolate-Peanut Butter Cups that I have been storing since Christmas. Yum.

Then just before going to see the play at the OLT, it was so cold and damp and miserable out that Beulah and I felt shivery, so I persuaded her to go to Nate's with me for a cup of their hot chocolate. It didn't take much persuasion.

The play was The Subject Was Roses by Frank D. Gilroy. It reminded me of a Tennessee Williams' play, because of its setting - an American apartment in a big city (in this case, New York) in the 1940's - and the theme: a family that fights all the time. The son, a young man back from World War II, wants to be a writer. Hmm, could this be autobiographical? If so, it will be the third autobiographical play we've had this year, along with Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.

The point I liked best in the play was that the father had married the mother because he'd like the blue coat, hat and shoes she wore when they first met; she married him because she thought he was going to be rich. Bad reasons. I found it hard to feel very sympathetic to any of them.
