I got this one from [livejournal.com profile] sparklebutch. It wouldn't be my first choice of culture in which to live - that would probably be the Harappan culture, or the ancient Egyptian - but it's pretty close, especially if you're thinking of the early period, the Minoans or Myceneans.

The Greeks were a more relaxed and artistically refined sequel to the civilizations of Mesopotamia. Yeah you're cool, but it wouldn't hurt to shut up once in a while.

What is your ancient civilization?

I liked mine... and I saw earlier that your actual heritage is "Anglo-celt" you said? :)

Yes indeed. My mother's ancestors were Irish and Scots, my father's English and Welsh. I like to think I'm descended from the people who put up Stonehenge and those other nice carved standing stones.

I like the Celtic art in their picture, too.

But I love so many ancient cultures that it would be hard to pin down a real favourite. I've been reading about ancient Greeks all spring, so it's suitable. My favourite is probably the Harappa culture but they are so mysterious and unknown - that's part of the appeal, like the Etruscans.

This 'ancient Greece' pic is nicely slashy though. Hurt/comfort.

Kinky ;)

I've been having a bit of a pre-Roman Britain trip lately, is why I'm so giggly over it.

I always like the idea of pre-Roman Britain, before they were corrupted by all that indoor heating (which they seem to have since recovered from) and good roads.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Created a magnificent precedent of imperialism? Invented amazing perversions? Violence as entertainment? Mass enslavement of millions? I'm not criticizing them for these things. Just pointing them out.

You're supposed to say, "brought peace". So the quote goeth.

But in seriousness, you're kinda preaching to an already loud choir here :)

Well, hey, I don't really believe any culture is all good or all bad. People in any society are good or bad, and act accordingly. Everybody muddles through, one way or another.

I think I'm kinda allergic to empires, is all. Concentration of power given to a specific group.

Yeah, I agree, at least in principle. At the same time there are individual imperialists whom I find delightful and fascinating - Lionel Luthor, Julius Caesar, Philip II of Macedonia, etc. Looks as if I can tolerate imperialists but not empires.

I don't think you'd like these guys so much irl, though :)

Since there's no way to actually meet these people to test the theory, I don't know. It's like meeting people you only know online - there are bound to be surprises.
