Jawaiian Dick: Byrd of Paradise
Jan. 29th, 2005 09:20 pmHawaiian Dick: Byrd of Paradise is a graphic novel by Clay Moore and Steven Griffin. Vaguely supernatural themes, about a private eye living in Hawaii. It's an independent comic, and it isn't a superhero comic, and because it's the kind of comic I want to see more of, I wanted to like it. But I wasn't terribly impressed.
It had some charm, but not much. It wasn't very slick - there was something a little amateurish about it, as if it needed more work, more polish, more thought.... Maybe. The story wasn't terrible but it wasn't gripping. The characterization held no surprises. The splash covers and pages were great, as if they'd been given more time and attention.
The part I liked best were the one-page or half-page mini-stories that are (they say) online, and featured in the graphic novel as a sort of back-up section.
I was glad I got this from the library; I would have been disappointed if I'd spent money on it.
