I watched Carnivale with maaboroshi tonight. Sometimes I think I'm too much of a wimp to watch this show, it's way too scary for me. Reminds me of Hellblazer, so often too close to my tolerance level, and yet something about it remains compelling.

Scariest image: the broken mannikins at the Crone's place, especially the one with the nail through the head. But there were lots of images that were almost as scary.

Or maybe... well, heck, there were a lot of scary images. Seeing Ruthie's snake almost strangle her was pretty scary, too. I assume it's Lodz doing this, miffed because he died in Ruthie's place?

Mmm. I don't think it's Lodz's doing. I think it's nature trying to take back what it was meant to have. But we shall see!

Isn't it good? Very... effective, which is why I am so creeped out by it tonight. My favourite episode yet has been the last one of first season, where Ben cut his throat and Scudder told him that wasn't something he could do.

And the plot just keeps getting thicker. And scarier.

Nature in the form of the snake? That too is possible. But I think Lodz is haunting the place - or, more specifically, haunting Ruthie - because of her role in his death, which of course she doesn't even know about.

Lodz is definitely haunting the place, but he made sure Ruthie saw him, and led her to Sofie. If he knew he had her following and he wants her dead, why bring her into his old trailer and then... nothing happens?

Besides that, she had two snakes die - bite and kill one another, and then a third try to kill her. Sounds like the animals know she's unnatural.

That was the last episode we had - we get it for two hours every Sunday nights with no ads on the government station, so it's something to look forward to every Sunday. What season is it up to, now?

We just got the third episode of the second season, so we aren't far past that. (I believe we're getting it at the same time the American stations are showing it.) I wonder how long it's going to go on? I wonder if/when we'll get a resolution to all the weirdness?

Maybe he didn't expect Sophie's presence, which put a damper on his manifestation. Maybe he's just playing with Ruthie.

Well, and Lodz isn't the first ghost she's seen -- there was the old flame, and maybe another? I've been thinking that she's alive, but having been dead, she's able to "pierce the veil" in ways that others can't, such as seeing the dead. Until Lodz seemed to actually want her to follow him, I wasn't even sure she was seeing anything "real" -- and come to think of it, I'm still not. I don't know that that was actually Lodz, or a manifestation in his form to take her to Sophie... but then, why? It was a good transition to that disturbingly creepy scene, but Ruthie didn't seem to serve any particular purpose there.

Which also makes me wonder if it is Lodz leading her someplace, or someone else.

I like your idea that Ruthie is seeing things that others can't see because of her death experience. Does this mean she will see Scudder?

There have been interesting images of people leading people from one place to another, in several cases - a sort of inverse of the times we have seen people chasing people. And the life/death veil seems variable.

I wonder about the ghosts of Babylon. Will Ruthie be able to see them all? In daytime? Or is she only able to see ghosts at night - no, she saw the old flame in daylight, I think. Hmm.

Oh, that's an interesting possibility. If Scudder is actually dead. I don't remember, do we know positively that he is? I mean, wasn't Justin told that he had to kill Scudder to assume the power?

And yeah, Ruthie saw her old flame at the top of a ladder in full daylight. Man. This show is just fascinating!

No. People have talked about him as if he was dead, but I don't see that as any proof!

With Ben's middle name being Krohn (as Jessica the sharp-eyed and memoried remembered from the wanted flyer), I'm wondering if that's his mother's maiden name, and that's connected to the hillbilly scavengers in whose hands he is right now...

Oh my goodness - she is sharp eyed! Mysteriouser and mysteriouser....

Scary scavengers. But with the Krohn/Scudder connection, no wonder they backed off.
