It seems to me that if we just wrote about things we knew about, we wouldn't expand our scope very often, or have much to write about. I wouldn't let myself be limited by sticking to what I know. Really.

Yeah, but thing is, you see something, get interested, learn about it, then fic. You don't, "I know nothing about this, wanna fic, let's research".

I don't always learn about it first. Sometimes I write the story first and then look up stuff as I need to. Or fake it. Sometimes I do the research and get caught up in reading and then don't end up writing anything at all.

The trick is finding the balance.
