<b>1. AUs: yes please or what's the point?</b>
Yes, please. A good AU is a wonderful thing. It takes the essence of character - which is the most important thing about fanfic in general and slash in particular - and is able to examine it in a new and different way. Bad AU is unbearable but often you get a decent quality of writing because the author has taken something original and different, has an idea that is truly self-generated and not a rehash of what's on the show or what she's read in other people's fic.
<b>2. What's the best AU you've read?</b>
<i>The Larton Chronicles</i> by Rhiannon, a series of <i>The Professionals</i> slash stories in which Bodie is a horse-mad soldier and Doyle is a writer, in a small town in the Engish midlands. These stories are beautifully written. Treasures.
Second choice: <a href="http://smallville.slashdom.com/archive/11/follyand.html" target="blank"><i>Folly and Follicularity</i></a> by Dark Emerald. A charming Regency Romance with Lex in the role like that of Mr. Darcy.
Third choice: <lj site="livejournal.com" user="isagel">'s Roman story <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/isagel/17999.html" target="blank"><i>Captured</i></a>, in which Lex is a Senator and Clark a slave.
Fourth choice: Beresford Lane's <a href="http://www.anvilfalls.com/whionel/index.html" target="blank">Daddy Long Legs</a>, a story in which Whitney didn't die or join the Marines, but became a quarterback for the Metropolis Sharks with Lionel's backing, while they have an edgy and interesting sexual relationship. "Lionel was a performance artist, and Whitney's pleasure was just a byproduct."
<b>3. What's the worst AU you've read?</b>
One which put the <i>Lord of the Rings</i> characters in our twentieth century. I shudder.
<b>4. How would you like to see your fandom altered that you haven't seen yet?</b>
I don't know. When I think of something, I'll write it.
<b>5. What AU worked that you never would have expected? </b>
Any that did work! The sign of a truly good AU is that it is unexpected and inventive.
