from The Fannish Friday Five:

1. . What type of fannish interaction do you prefer: conventions, smaller in-person gatherings, mailing lists, newsgroups, blogs/journals, IRC?

I like them all. Everything. Don't do newsgroups much any more; do a lot of small in-person gatherings whenever possible; love livejournals and conventions. There are not as many conventions convenient to me as there used to be. As for the far-away ones, they are, unfortunately, expensive.

2. Are you always upset when your show gets canceled or have you ever been (not so) secretly relieved?

When X-Files was cancelled I hadn't watched it in several years and didn't feel much either way; the heartbreak had happened much earlier. Most of the shows I have followed fannishly have been over before I got into the fandom, like The Professionals, or were not regular TV shows in the first place, like Horatio Hornblower, or are movies and/or books, like The Lord of the Rings.

3. Do you find icons an integral part of lj'ing or would you be just as happy with one icon as with fifty?

Huh? I like good icons but they are peripheral to my interest.

4. Do you prefer to read fanfic in zines or online?

In zines. On the whole. I like Netfic too.

5. Do you consider yourself FIAWOL* (fandom is a way of life) or FIJAGDH* (fandom is just a goddamn hobby)?

Neither or both. It sounds a lot like sterotyping to say my life is primarily fannish, but you know, fannish-related activities take up a lot of my waking hours. Most of my friends are fans. Most of my travels have been because of fandom - to conventions, or to pursue fannish interests. Fandom has enhanced my life immeasurably. Not so much, I think, a 'way of life' but a personality inclination.

It means fandom is so important in your life that you can't see ever walking away from it.

No, I never will, but I'm not sure that means it isn't a hobby. Fandom covers so many angles for me - comic book fandom, which I would never willingly give up; watching TV is a fannish activity for me, since I don't watch shows without participating in the fandom one way or another; I have a fannish attitude to movies; I'll probably never stop reading Dorothy Dunnett's novels, or stop wanting to talk to other fans with my interests.
