(1) The map is of Astibar, a City-State towards the east of the Peninsula of the Palm. Places are marked, like the Temple of Adaon and Rovigo's House. There appear to be trees, fields, a few hills. The place looks sort of rural and small.
(2) Named characters:
Sandre, Duke of Astibar, was in exile, now dead
Alberico, who rules four of the nine provinces - The Tyrant
Brandin of Ygrath, who was mentioned in the Prologue as the enemy leader
Young Adreano the Poet
Nerone, a painter
An unnamed musician with political interests and wide-set grey eyes
(3) References to religion - the Triad. Presumably three gods: Eanna, Morion of the Portals, and Adaon.
(4) The khav room - sounds like a place to drink coffee. The Paelion sounds sort of Greek and neo-classical.
(5) Music, art, word-games, poetry, puzzles, and gambling seem to be important pastimes.
(6) This chapter establishes the Renaissance atmosphere, lively and artistic; and a general sense of the politics - city states in a condition of upheaval, being fought over by Alberico and Brandin. The return of Duke Sandre's body to Astibar is seen as signifcant.
