We seek him here, we seek him there,
    Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven?—Is he in hell?
    That demmed, elusive Pimpernel.

I've been trying to find a copy of The Scarlet Pimpernel, the 1934 film version with Leslie Howard.

I have the 1982 version with Anthony Andrews and Ian McKellen, and I love it. I don't like the 2002 version with Richard E. Grant - about which I acually love everything (especially Jamie Bamber and Martin Shaw, and oh my goodness, Denise Black) ...except Richard E. Grant as the Pimpernel, whom I found stiff, unbelievable, and unsympathetic. I couldn't bear to watch it again. So it goes.

But the 1934 version? Why is it so hard to find?

I just read the exciting news that there's going to be a Perry Mason movie, and that Robert Downey Jr. will play Perry Mason.

My goodness. I wonder who will be Della Street?

When I was six years old I loved Perry Mason - the one show I didn't want to miss. It was probably the first thing I ever watched that wasn't a cartoon. About five years later, the Perry Mason novels were the first adult novels I started to read.

I hope they aren't planning to camp it up, as they did with Holmes. I can't quite imagine that. But apparently it will be set in 1930s Los Angeles, so I'm hoping for witty film noir.

I watched Fringe tonight, episode 4x19, 'Letters of Transit'.

My goodness. What a surprise. )
