Adho Mukha Svanasana re-enters my life...
Nov. 23rd, 2011 08:40 amI did yoga this morning, which is of course a good thing, but not unusual.
What is unusual, though, is that I did the Adho Mukha Svanasana - the Downward Facing Dog. A pose I haven't done in two years. I thought I'd never be able to do it again, since the elbow replacement, but hey. I was wrong. I did it. It wasn't even difficult, though it was different; doing it with one arm slightly bent and not equal in strength to the other.
It felt good, both physically and psychologically.
The Mother of Dragons...
Nov. 23rd, 2011 02:54 pmNews from yesterday: Science fiction author Anne McCaffrey dies at 85.
She was the first science fiction author I ever read; I loved Dragonfight, which I bought at a roadside bus stop somewhere between Ramsgate and London when I was seventeen. I loved it. Or, to be some specific, I loved F'lar.
As the years went by and Anne McCaffrey wrote more and more books, I found them more and more unreadable, and soon stopped. But I'll always have a soft spot for her because of Dragonfight.
I bought a John Wyndham novel at the same time; it was a good start for me, for science fiction.
And I've heard people argue that Anne McCaffrey didn't write science fiction, but fantasy; and that she even said so herself. I never believed this. At least in the first book, the dragons were fully rationalized: it was a futuristic society on a distand and different planet. I liked that.
Maybe we could split the difference, and call it speculative fiction. (But isn't all fiction speculative by default?)
Downton Abbey...
Nov. 23rd, 2011 11:56 pm- Watched the last two episodes to date of Downton Abbey with
maaseru and Pim. We loved them, of course. Knew what the cliffhanger ending had to be... ( but it was nice... ) - Beulah came over for lunch. I discovered - and made - a very nice roast squash dish with walnuts and cranberries, and beet soup. Finally, finally gave her her birthday present.
- I've had custody of
maaseru's electric fireplace for a year or two now, and just learned today that there is an on/off switch on it. Who knew? Just as well I found it, too. I can't get the remote to work. Even went out the other day to get a new battery, but nope, it didn't help. - Got a few hours freelance work in.
- Stayed up late doing French homework. Got it done, though.
