It seems my DVD player has died. I have a spare - which won't play .avi files, but at least it's something. Luckily I have a spare stashed in my locker; I bought an extra when they were on sale at one time, knowing DVD players don't last forever. Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to plug it all in properly. I know, read the manual. (Sigh.)

I have a yen to learn some Spanish. (Hebrew too, but Spanish is more immediate.) I browsed the Spanish language-learning sections at both Coles bookstore and the Ottawa Public Library today. Coles had lots. Most looked good, all were expensive. At the library, the price was right but there wasn't much. Most of it is checked out, I imagine. I got an Assimil "Beginners Spanish" set - it looks great, and I like the Assimil method, but it's meant for French-speakers. That might be okay: I used the Esperanto set for French-speakers once. Also got a "Teach Yourself Spanish". We shall see which I prefer.

Lisa and I went for a nice cold walk. It was supposed to go above the freezing point today, and I consequently dressed lightly - even left my beautiful new hat at home. Unfortunately (why do I ever believe a weather forecast?) it was cold, windy, and snowing most of the time we were out. I took a bus home, and picked up the ingredients for the squash casserole I was reading about in a magazine this morning.

While I was having breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru, two Post Office trucks and a UPS truck came to our building - with nothing for us, but hope springs eternal. Shortly after she left, a package came for me: The Tarot Bible by Sarah Bartlett. I saw it in a local store and coveted it; was able to get it for about half the price online. I want to patronize local bookshops, but really couldn't afford the higher price. I'm thrilled to have it, though.

Time for the treadmill now...

Installed my new DVR this afternoon: the Pioneer SVR-460H. It works beautifully. As far as I can tell, the picture is sharper and better than on my Toshibo - which might be my imagination, or it might be because the Toshiba was wearing out.

It isn't really new, or at least, not just acquired. It's been in my locker since I bought it a few years ago in a good sale at Costco, knowing I'd need it eventually. If I remember correctly, I got it at the Costco in Gatineau.

Mind you, I haven't read the manual yet. That will come in the fullness of time. Which means, when I need to do something more complex than playing a disk. Setting the time was a bit problematic. Why does each remote control have all the buttons in such different places?
