And if I'm not reading...
Feb. 15th, 2008 12:39 pmFebruary7, 2008:
Okay, even I can’t read ALL the time, so I’m guessing that you folks might voluntarily shut the covers from time to time as well… What else do you do with your leisure to pass the time? Walk the dog? Knit? Run marathons? Construct grandfather clocks? Collect eggshells?
I don't have a dog (though I'd love to have one), my knitting is embarrassing, I often walk but I never, never run, don't do clocks, and always trash my eggshells.
So what do I do with my free time? I'm tempted to say "what free time is this?" but of course I have plenty of discretionary time; I just use it all up. Notoriously.
Okay. I do the following:
- Watch TV with friends and write about it on LJ.
- Write fiction. And sometimes poetry too.
- Talking. I love the art of conversation. I especially like - and seldom get - meaningful conversation: about philosophy and world views and significant experiences, or good memories, or travel, or how the world moves and what moves it.1 I don't like argumentative convesations and I get bored if the conversation is - I was going to say "too trivial" but I might say, "not about one of my interests". Sports, for example? It's unlikely I'd talk about sports. Maybe about the psychology and theory of sports.
- Walk. I love walking. I walk a lot.
- Exercise; yoga, weights. Occasionally a martial art. I have a Tai Chi with Sword tape I want to start using regularly - but I haven't found time for it yet. Studied Tai Chi with Sword once in a class, and loved it.
- I read comic books. Not quite the same as reading books; similar, but more visual, more artistic.
- I don't like to shop, but I like to browse in libraries, bookstores and magazine shops. And to visit their coffee shops, now that there is an (admirable) tradition of attaching coffee shops to bookstores.
- Cooking. Eating in restaurants. Sharing meals with friends.
1 That's a quote, but my memory can't quite pin it down. I think it's from Camelot. T.H. White, or just the movie? I don't recall.
