Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] glinda_north! Have a wonderful day - a wonderful year - full of good books, good friends and good times.

I was happily reading Starburst #348, and came a cross a quote from Paul Kasey that puzzled me. Paul Kasey is the gent who often acts in Doctor Who under piles of prosthetics - the Chief Judoon, a Cyberman, that sort of thing. He was quoted as saying, regarding the Cyberman costume, "Underneath all the armour was a lycra catsuit and they had put in - thankfully - poppers, so we could go to the toilet."

My question: It sounds as if, in this context, "poppers" means what I would call snap fasteners. I thought "poppers" were drugs. The open dictionary says "popper" means "a container of stimulant drug (amyl nitrate or butyl nitrite)" or "a container for cooking popcorn". Okay, so I turn to Chambers Online and it says it means "press stud". I have no clue what a "press stud" is. It sounds like something in the building trade, or Jack Harkness playing journalist.

So: what are poppers really?
