I got this (as so much else) from [livejournal.com profile] kikibug13.

I like maps. I like the mystique of maps. Fantasy maps, real maps, top maps, road maps, anything.

From Booking Through Thursday: What are your reading habits? Do you tend to read at specific times during the day, or does it vary from day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute?

My reading habits. Hmm.

(1) If it's written, I read it. If it's in a foreign language, I read it anyway, just in case it's one I can read or partially read. (Sounding out the letters in Russian or Greek or Arabic is always fun, even if I won't know what it means.) If it isn't in a language I can read at all - Japanese, say - I glare at it because it's denying me access.

(2) I tend to read when I have a spare moment, if "spare moment" is not an impossibility. I read as possible after work and on weekends and when I go to bed and at lunchtime and on the bus and (in summer) at the bus stop and in line at the bank and whatever other reading moments present themselves.

(3) It's a general rule of thumb that I always crave more time to read and sometimes steal sleeping time for the purpose. More than I should but what's a book-addict to do?

(4) I always, always carry a book with me everywhere I go. Sometimes more than one, just in case.

Family..

The questions on The Friday Five this week [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive are mostly about family, something I don't have much of:

1. How far back can you trace your family tree? My mother used to have a book tracing the family back to a Nicholas Rice, who went from Ireland to New England in the 1760s, and then via United Empire Loyalists his line tied in with the family of Thomas Grant, who came from Scotland in 1820. On my father's side, I only know names as far back as my grandparents, in England.

2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives? One of the Irish ancestors was a changeling. One of the Scots ancestors was a pirate and a rebel, Black Peter Grant. One of the English ancestors was a protestant martyr, Bishop Ridley.

3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives? I don't like the numbered names. Generally speaking, I like unique names, but if a relative has a good name, use it. The women in my mother's family tended to alternate the names Elizabeth Margaret and Margaret Elizabeth. (I am the former, my mother was the latter, though her mother was an Amy.)

4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional? Me? Good heavens, no. My family, more so, though not in any significant way. I guess the answer to both questions there is really 'no'.

5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them? I have no children, therefore there will be no passing on of tradition. If I did have children, the tradition I would like to pass on would be a love of learning.

Torchwoodtv posted the results of its poll for favourite episodes of Torchwood, so I think it's time to list the episodes in the order I liked them. I think my list is quite different from other people's list - I'll do 'favourite first', like the poll did, and I'll explain why I made the choices I did. 1. Captain Jack Harkness - No surprise. It was everyone's #1 favourite in the poll, too. )
