Book talk

For some reason I rushed off to work too quickly yesterday and forgot to bring my keys and my reading material for lunchtime. The second thing was more upsetting than the first. I'd planned to read another graphic novel, or part of one.

Instead I read a library book I had with me, Smoke Screen by Marianne MacDonald. I hadn't read any of her mysteries before; got this one out because, on looking at the first paragraph, I liked the writing style. That's a good reason for picking a book. I finished reading it last night - it was interesting enough that I wanted to. Not unflawed: the author did something in the plot that I always dislike. It's a spoiler but I'll explain with a cut tag. ).

Still, it was certainly good enough for me to plan to look for more of these books. I loved the writing style; the ambience - the book world of London and Oxford. It reminded me of The Ninth Gate, with mysetious old books and huge private libraries and people who are willing to kill to possess a book. I liked Dido Hoare, too, single mother and antique book expert with a nice humanistic, naturalistic style. Even when she did unwise things - like return to the scene of the crime when the police had made it a condition of her bail that she not go within a mile of the place - she looked more resourceful than stupid, more brave than silly. I also liked her private life - her young son, her aging father.her devoted babysitter, her teenage assistant.

I was reminded a little of the Notting Hill mysteries of Anabel Donald. I love those, and haven't seen a new one in ages.
