Like yesterday, after doing yoga at home I set out to take the bus to the fitness club, where I was going to use the elliptical trainer for twenty minutes and then go to work.

Like yesterday, by the time I got to the bus stop I realized it was a lovely day, easy underfoot and worth walking to work after all. The snow was light and powdery, easy to walk in and glittering on the tree-branches. A crisp day, a winter day at its most beautiful.

My walking entertainment was the audiobook Coming Into the Country by John McPhee. The tape started with side 2 so I listened in media res, having no idea what it was about. It was easy enough: it's about Alaska and the people there. Just the thing to listen to on a brisk, snowy day in Ottawa.

At first I thought the reader was poor, but I listened anyway (having nothing else with me) and got used to the voice - accepted it for the quality of the writing. When I got to side 1, I was reminded that the reader was the author himself; that made me forgive a lot. It would not have made me forgive anything, if the book were less well written.

Unfortunately, it's excerpts from the book, not the whole thing.
