A while back [livejournal.com profile] ubertodd had a journal entry about the meaning of 'perineum', and that got me thinking how it's an unusual word, not one that we often hear in casual conversation. I always think there should be another word for the perineum, one that doesn't sound so much like Latin, but as far as I know, there isn't.

Funnily, though, it's a word I hear a lot. First of all, I read it in slash fic. That's probably where I first got used to it. I don't use it myself in fiction, because of the way it sounds Latinate to me - I'm careful not to use that sort of word. I suppose some day I may have to use it, and if so I'll find a way, but so far I've been able to find ways of avoiding it.

More, though, I hear it in yoga a lot. Both kundalini yoga (where it is significant as the location of a chakra) and in hatha yoga, where it is significant for positioning the body in certain balanced ways - maybe still to do with the chakra at that location.

I wonder in anything rhymes with it.
