A long Monday
Jun. 16th, 2003 10:12 pmA good day, a tiring day, a sunny day with a lot of energy-depleting work and the aroma of lilacs and tiny exciting discoveries. An example of the latter: walking home from my friend Lynne's place, I discovered an alley in the neighbourhood that I'd never noticed before, that was something of a short cut to my place, so I followed it. It led to a t-junction with another alley that seemed to be going roughly in the right direction, so I turned.
It was basically a route for people to drive their cars in to garages behind their houses, because this neighbourhood was densely built before all houses had, or needed, cars and garages. It was a warm evening and everyone had their back doors open, or were lounging on their back balconies. A big black dog barked at me loudly, wagging his tail all the while while a cat sat just out of leash-range. Some verandahs had lawn chairs leaning against the railing; some balconies had hammocks and barbecues; one gentleman was sitting reading on his patio and in another house, a party was going on with lots of young laughter. "It's better than American Idol!" a young man was saying as I passed the window, and of course I wondered what "it" was.
The alley led to a dead end. I had to walk back past all the same houses, getting another perspective.
Before work today: kundalini yoga with Aliya again. It gets easier every time, feels better every time. At lunchtime I went to the fitness club again to play on the elliptical trainer, this time with earphones so I could watch TV. They offer ten channels: I was less than impressed, though the French version of Much Music was okay. Searching out lunch at the Rideau Centre without going off the ayurvedic diet remains a challenge: I opted for veggie pea soup and cucumber sandwich.
Then I bought myself Iyengar's "Light on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" - there's wisdom literature for you. I read the introduction (by Yehudi Menuhin) and prologue (by Iyengar) in the line for the teller at the bank. There's lots of Sanskrit in there: I think I'm going to like this.
Of course, I believe Smallville slash to be wisdom literature. I have a wide perspective on the matter.
