Sunday:

  • I got over whatever block was keeping me from writing the Pirates of the Caribbean challenge story from [livejournal.com profile] blackbyrde. Unfortunately I had little time to work on it; managed to scribble a few pages during the OSFS meeting.

  • Enjoyed the Ottawa Science Fiction Society meeeting, which started with videotaped highlights of recent coverage of Mars exploration. Very cool. Then a collaborative story effect - gad, I hate doing that! sharing the writing is difficult for me, very difficult, especially when it's verbal. Then a discussion of 'how to make web pages', very useful. I had too many questions, but cleared up a few things I was uncertain of.

  • Had dinner with the OSFS crowd at the Royal Buffet. Yes, I was off my diet. Enjoyed it, too.

  • Watched part of the Golden Globes Awards, hoping to see The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King win a few awards, and to my delight, it did. Especially "Best Director". I thought Peter Jackson was wonderful: so human, among all the slick people who seemed to be mostly image. Just saw glimpses of Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan, who looked their best. I was appalled by many of the stars - how bad they looked, how awful the dresses. Not all, but most. Dustin Hoffman looked good. So did Sharon Stone. The overview of Michael Douglas' career made me realize how few of his movies I have actually liked.

All that money and designers falling over themselves so that they'll wear something of theirs and they still manage to look like that...

/me shakes head.

And I'm sorry, but that thing Meryl Streep was wearing? Um... so did not suit her. What happened to simple elegance? And Nicole Kidman? That was the scariest thing there -- especially with the little headband thing she had going.

Heee, and don't I sound catty ;)

Happy Monday morning.

Happy Monday morning to you, too!

The actresses I thought looked good were Jennifer Lopez (surprise!), Sharon Stone (she always does) and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I was a little ... appalled... at the number of actresses I thought looked fashionably identical - so like each other that all individuality was lost. (I suppose ugly dresses are better than being one of the crowd?) Nicole Kidman looked downright strange. I rather liked the weird little headband thing because it *was* weird and different - but the overall effect wasn't great. I think Kidman is a Stepford Wife.

Poor Al Pacino seems to have a problem and Danny DeVito was embarrassing, though it was funny to see him standing beside Sharon Stone. (I assume he was standing?)

The best thing about these award shows is the opportunity it gives us to be catty afterwards!

But Peter Jackson is true gold.

Johnny looked good. (http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20040126/capt.gga17101260158.golden_globes_gga171.jpg) :p Only guy wearing a hat -- how I adore. Ah, my bias.

I do agree. Peter Jackson was so wonderfully human compared to many people I saw who seems to be there mostly for a fashion show. I never usually get into the whole 'fashion' craze of award shows. The only fashion I got excited about last night was the entrance of Johnny on the red carpet, 2.5 minutes before the show was going to begin. I had heard that he was trying to avoid the red carpet, so imagine my surprise.

I was extremely happy with the Lord of the Rings win, and definitely Peter Jackson's win. Fran is adorable.

Johnny looked good.

Thanks so much for the pic! I kept wanting to see him but all the time I was watching the camera steadfastly avoided him. Pffft. Kept showing people I don't like or want to see, like Robin Williams and Clint Eastwood and guys I don't even recognize.

Yes, wasn't Fran great? Another 'real' person.

I thought Anthony Minghella looked jealous and resentful of Peter Jackson's win, and then was quite charmed (as I was too) when Jackson cited the other nominees as being good company to be in. No one else said anything like that.

I thought Cate Blanchett looked quite lovely in her dark red gown. I had forgotten she was pregnant. How do they walk in those heels? :)

I missed Cate Blanchett too. Dang.

I don't know how anyone walks in heels!

I think just the fact that he KNEW all of the nominees and could so easily recite them on the spot says so much about how respectful and humble he is. I appreciated that too.

And how dare they not show more Johnny shots!! He showed up very late on the red carpet and I barely caught him. I was so happy. Did you see this one? (http://www.lbryandlc.com/ggsh24.jpg) I sob with laughter, haha.

Yes, and it's rare enough that you see Johnny smiling like that.

Don't you wish you could eavesdrop on the conversation?

He was reacting to Bill Murray's acceptance speech for Best Actor. Bill was saying something (humorously) about giving the undue credit to those actors on the other side of the aisle: the dramatic actors. Something rather tongue in cheek. ;)
