Cornfield

Exercise exorcised demons and dreams.

Lex ran until he had to stop. He was breathing heavily, pursued by his thoughts. He stood in a cornfield. Confused memories crowded him: Cassandra's vision of dying sunflowers and dark sunlight; himself running while meteors fell and a man on a cross cried, "Help me!"

This was the same field. Clark had been bound here with red paint on his chest, his eyes full of pain. What pain could have penetrated that invulnerable body? Hands that could touch flame? What could have overcome someone who ran faster than sight?

Lex felt fiercely protective. He had been unable to save himself. He couldn't save Jeremy. But he would save this beautiful, innocent, gifted farmboy whatever the cost - from Lionel, from meteor rocks, from freaks and the world's prying.

"Clark," he whispered, "Trust me!"

But only the wind heard him.
