The 30 Days of Marvel meme:

Day #5: Your favourite team.

I've made no secret that I'm very fond of X-Men.

But there are so many X-Men, in so many comics: uncanny, astonishing, amazing. Some with the same or overlapping characters, some entirely different. The X-Men are the leading force of mutants these days; not the tiny group of mutant students they once were, no longer the followers of Charles Xavier, no longer even a specific group of characters. I keep stumbling over X-Men I never saw before.

According to the official Marvel website, as of today, here is a picture of the X-Men:

And these, they say, are the current members:

Angel (Warren Worthington III), Armor (Hisako Ichiki), Colossus (Piotr Rasputin), Cyclops (Scott Summers), Dazzler (Alison Blaire), Emma Frost, Gambit (Remy LeBeau), Husk (Paige Guthrie), Iceman (Robert Drake), Magneto, Namor, Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), Northstar (Jean–Paul Beaubier), Pixie, Professor X (Charles Xavier), Psylocke (Elisabeth Braddock), Rogue (Anna Marie), Storm (Ororo Munroe), Wolverine (James Howlett)

Of which Magneto, Gambit and Emma Frost are my favourites, though Cyclops these days is right up there, especially when he's with Emma. And is Wolverine no longer using the name Logan at all?

I've loved the X-Men since the fateful day I read the first issue of the first X-Men comic in 1963. But no comic is better than its writer or artist, and X-Men has had its dire patches.

    Runners-up for favourite team:

X-Force, in the Rob Liefeld days
New Mutants, in the Bill Sienkiewicz days
Young Avengers, as drawn by Jim Cheung
