There used to be a guy in my yoga class that had a strange effect on my perception. Not a big thing, but there was something odd in my perception of him. A couple of times I thought, "Who is that woman?" and then had to remind myself, "Oh, it's George. How could I mistake him for a woman?" He didn't look or act particularly androgynous as far as I could see.

Last night the teacher announced that this student had changed gender from male to female, and it was an occasion for celebration, and he should be congratulated for making this courageous and difficult transition. Suddenly my oddity in perceiving him - her - was totally clear to me.

I was proud of everyone there. This is the way it always ought to be.

I have a friend I met mid-transition, but she is still so much like a "Dave" to me that I really wonder if she's doing the right thing. That's cool that you weren't really sure. (Then again, I saw that an artist friend of mine is the artist guest of honor at an upcoming convention, and I had to blink to realize that the girl name was the same guy I used to know! To me, it's so brave to take that drastic of a step! Guess I'm just content to be androgynous!)

I have found that there is so much diversity among my various transsexual (and transgendered) friends that I had to conclude that the only thing they had in common was transsexuality (or trandsgenderedness). When they actually change gender, I find it easy to adjust with some people, and difficult with others.

And yes, it's an incredibly brave step to take, and difficult in so many ways.

Re androgyny: have you ever read the book Androgyny (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0892540508/qid=1066878413/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_3/102-4072199-1938519?v=glance&n=507846) by June Singer? I read it years ago - it isn't very recent - and found it fascinating.

And speaking of androgynous people, not to mention human beauty, I was fascinated by this picture of Johnny Depp (http://members.rogers.com/fajrdrako/tincans.jpg) - because of his beautiful, androgynous look here.

The clarity of your perceptions has never failed to impress and please me. You are a wizard, passing through life dressed as a panda.

I like that - being both a wizard and a panda! Two good things to be.
