Yoga class...
Oct. 22nd, 2003 08:04 amThere used to be a guy in my yoga class that had a strange effect on my perception. Not a big thing, but there was something odd in my perception of him. A couple of times I thought, "Who is that woman?" and then had to remind myself, "Oh, it's George. How could I mistake him for a woman?" He didn't look or act particularly androgynous as far as I could see.
Last night the teacher announced that this student had changed gender from male to female, and it was an occasion for celebration, and he should be congratulated for making this courageous and difficult transition. Suddenly my oddity in perceiving him - her - was totally clear to me.
I was proud of everyone there. This is the way it always ought to be.

Re androgyny: have you ever read the book Androgyny (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0892540508/qid=1066878413/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_3/102-4072199-1938519?v=glance&n=507846) by June Singer? I read it years ago - it isn't very recent - and found it fascinating.
And speaking of androgynous people, not to mention human beauty, I was fascinated by this picture of Johnny Depp (http://members.rogers.com/fajrdrako/tincans.jpg) - because of his beautiful, androgynous look here.
