Yoga abd the perineum....

A while back ubertodd had a journal entry about the meaning of 'perineum', and that got me thinking how it's an unusual word, not one that we often hear in casual conversation. I always think there should be another word for the perineum, one that doesn't sound so much like Latin, but as far as I know, there isn't.

Funnily, though, it's a word I hear a lot. First of all, I read it in slash fic. That's probably where I first got used to it. I don't use it myself in fiction, because of the way it sounds Latinate to me - I'm careful not to use that sort of word. I suppose some day I may have to use it, and if so I'll find a way, but so far I've been able to find ways of avoiding it.

More, though, I hear it in yoga a lot. Both kundalini yoga (where it is significant as the location of a chakra) and in hatha yoga, where it is significant for positioning the body in certain balanced ways - maybe still to do with the chakra at that location.

I wonder in anything rhymes with it.

I've heard it referred to as the "taint", as in "t'aint your asshole and t'aint your goodies".

Probably not useful in fiction writing, though.

Yeah, I think taint is fairly common. Or tween (it's between). Unfortunately, both sound somewhat unpleasant. Who wants to touch a taint? Oh, and miracle mile. Even though it's more like an inch.

Any word can be made to work, especially when it's eased along with familiarity. The problem is in getting the familiarity in the first place. Yes, pleasantness of sound is an issue with me, too. At least in this instance.
