Assessment: Day One

Gwen counted the ways she fucked up her first day.

She freed the sex alien by throwing the chisel at Owen. He asked for it, but still. Her mistake. Then Jack messed up later, and Owen too.

She ruined the interrogation by snogging Carys. Pheromones made her do it, but she hadn't exactly resisted, had she? Or wanted to? She'd loved it.

She was lucky to escape. Owen had fared no better. He was lucky, too.

Worse, they'd seen her snogging the alien. Damn CCTV.

On the other hand - surely the worst was over now.

She'd do better tomorrow.

Oh, yes, much to learn. And more all the time.

One of the things I love about Gwen is the way she can learn, and does. Look at the strides she made between "Day One" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". And she was doing even better in "Exit Wounds".

So, on a symbolic level Gwen and Owen released lust or the evil parts of sex, in the form of the sex alien. Then not long after, they pursue an affair--that ultimately is bad for Gwen, Rhys and Owen.

{I really like this. I always felt bad for Gwen having a first day like that.)

Yes. Very cool. And they did it in a confrontational way, too - it wasn't love they released or expressed, but sexual challenge and anger.

Yeah, Gwen's first day was pretty terrible. And the next adventure we see didn't get much better for her. I like the way she had the courage to carry on and learn to cope with the things the Rift threw at her.
