School

On her first day at school, Toshiko Sato learned many things.

She learned where to put her coat. She learned that the other children couldn't read or write or speak in two languages, the way she could. She was the smallest person in the class but the others didn't know where Japan was, or Mexico.

She'd never heard of the cartoons they watched on television, and they laughed at her. They played rough, and knocked her down in the schoolyard.

"What did you learn today?" her mother asked, when she got home.

"That I don't like children," said five-year-old Toshiko.

That got an out-loud chuckle from me. :-D She would absolutely be like that.

Very sweet though.

Yup. I can just picture Toshiko at five. Pretty much like she is now, but tinier.

I really like this - it works perfectly within the 100-word limit. ::applauds::

Thank you! I don't like writing a drabble that has nothing to say - I want substance - but it can be so difficult to fit real substance into 100 words.

The Tosh you write is someone I would dearly love.

I love Tosh, too. I take the liberty of being selective in what I take from canon as "my" Tosh.

My worry is that I end up writing too much of a "my Toshiko" and not enough of "canon Toshiko." Especially a worry because I still have not seen Season Two. Well, guess that also means simply that I can feel more free to write her as I feel, eh?

I don't think it should be too much of a problem caracterizing Tosh without having seen series 2. What it adds, mostly, besides her heroism at the end and background we didn't have before, is her unrequited love for Owen, which I hated. So I'd rather ignore it anyway. She does have some good bits: her affair with Tommy and some interesting stuff during "Adam", but that's not significant for long-range characterization.

The background we didn't have before is all from "Fragments" and it's brilliant. I can tell you details if you want. Or you could read a synopsis of the episode. Amazing stuff. It surprised and delighted me. (Even though it's pretty dark and grim.)

Anyway, I'd say you're safe to write Tosh as you see fit from series 1 as long as you don't say she's never suffered.
