Bloody January

PC Andy stood on a dark, rainy corner guarding a crime scene, feet cold and coffee colder. No one was out and about, not in this weather. Gwen was cosy inside with her boss and colleagues, all cheery efficiency. Must be a spooky-do, but no one was about to tell him that. Heaven forbid he should be forewarned if some space monster decided to come out and make supper of him.

Sometimes he glimpsed Gwen carrying mysterious equipment in black cases. Her smile made his day, but that didn't stop his feet from aching in the chilly damp.

Bloody Torchwood.

Very nice!

That surprised a laugh out of me. *g* Bloody Torchwood seems to be the general view.

Very nice!

Thank you! Writing this made me ask myself why I don't write about PC Andy more. I have answers for that, of course. (No time. Other ideas. More interactive characters.) But he's fun. I've been neglecting him.

I like a whole slew of Torchwood outsiders on the edges of the story: Captain John, Detective Swanson, PC Andy. I like poking at Torchwood from the outside.

Oh, I do like Detective Swanson. Andy is a fun character (I'm betting Tom Price puts a lot of himself in Andy) and I'm pleased to see you finding time for him.

I think he does. And lucky for all, he has plenty of talent and charm and a sort of je ne sais quoi quality that makes him seem very real, very sympathetic.

I'd do more with him if I could think of a good idea.

And Swanson - ! I adore the woman. I'd like to write about her more, too.

LOL!

Very Vimes that - there's law, and then there's your feet, and at the end of the day, they almost have equal weight.

Very Vimes that

Oh my goodness - I didn't even notice, but you're right! I have been subliminally, subconsciously learning from Sam Vimes - and of course, I could do worse.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Er, uh, I mean, thank you.

Got a little excited there.

And I'm sure you can't blame me!

The fact that I've been listening to the entire Vimes cycle from Feet of Clay onwards had a lot to do with that analogy. I was just at the part of Night Watch when he was talking about how happy his boots made him, too.

I've been listening to it on audiotape - at least, I was, but halfway through The Fifth Elephant I got distracted. Must get back to it! ...Boots or no boots.
