100 Proof

My name is John and I am an addict. Addicted to a warm voice, a deep laugh, the wild presence of Jack. Absence, now. A void deeper than the rumoured space between dimensions.

John drank to forget.

"Retcon does it better," suggested a therapist.

"But then I'd forget him," said John, reasonably. "I'd rather die."

"You will, if you don't lay off the drugs and booze."

"If Jack comes back, I'll never drink again," promised John.

Jack did not come back.

John waited. Sometimes, with the drugs, he could pretend he had Jack again.

And sometimes he could not.
