A Victorian double feature, tonight. I watched Doctor Who: The Next Doctor with [livejournal.com profile] commodorified, [livejournal.com profile] auriaephiala, [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze, and another friend. Again, I found it a little bland - fun to watch, but it didn't excite me the way the best Doctor Who episodes do. Again, I enjoyed the Victorian setting.

So after The Next Doctor we watched The Ruby in the Smoke, in which we saw Matt Smith, the next doctor. The young man who will play Eleven.

Interesting.

I didn't particularly like The Ruby in the Smoke, which seemed way too melodramatic to me, and not in the ways I like. Too many secret meetings with known killers in dark corners - bobody seemed to have an ounce of sense. Too many random murders, too much moustache-twirling on the part of the nasty villainess, who was played by Julie Walters - picturing this horrible killer as the sweet Mrs Weasley amused me no end. I was reminded why I don't like Philip Pullman's writing, but on the other have, I did like his protagonists this time - Sally Lockhart (played well by Billie Pyper), and her friends, including the one played by Matt Smith.

He has an interesting face, a lovely smile, and he runs well. This augurs well for the Doctor.

Sigh. I learned about this meeting while I was with [livejournal.com profile] raynedaze this afternoon, but I had other fish to fry (groceries, carpool hunting, ...)

It has gotten to the point that I may lose my job soon ... and would not regret it. The emphasis on SALES, as against Customer Service, is just a bit too much. I am also under-impressed as far as longevity of call-center-related jobs is concerned. Therefore, in the next week or two, I will start Job-Hunting again. :-/

Good luck in your job-search-to-come too, while I am at it.

I don't know... of course, I had a terrible time when 9 left, and I ended up loving Tennant.

I hadn't discovered the show when Nine left, so I never had that problem. I saw "Rose" first, but Ten was already the Doctor then - though series 2 hadn't come to Canada yet. Then I saw "New Earth" and "School Reunion" and I was intrigued by Ten. Then I saw all of series 1, and totally fell in love with Nine. But I never had that sense of forced transition.

Now... I love Tennant, but I'm rather looking forward to Eleven. I know I'll never get Nine back. There are many things about Ten I don't like, even though I love him. Eleven will be a chance for a sort of new start.

Yup, good luck to us both.

I liked The Ruby in the Smoke more in retrospect, looking back on it, than I did while watching. Not sorry I saw it, of course, even if just for Matt Smith.

I loved the sally lockheart telemovies. Especially the second one.

I'm quite excited about the new doctor.

I wish we'd had more of Nine. I love Tennant, but not as my Top Doctor. Yeah, I've watched all of them, have been since I was a kid.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Eleven does with it.

I think Eleven will be interesting. There are (many) choices that would have had me discouraged and reluctant to watch the show again; and I've certainly heard them suggested, some by Russell T Davies.

As it is, I'm looking forward to the show.

I should maybe look for the second one. I didn't like the story much, but I did like Sally.

I saw Ruby, and read three of the four books in the Sally Lockhart series. I didn't like them. I felt Pullman was trying too hard to put theme and agenda over characterization. So, I haven't bothered with the second film adaptation.

I think Pullman is a little odd with characterization, and makes characters spokesmen for ideas. Which sometimes means they act in ways I don't think real people would, or say things that don't seem convincing to me.

I really don't like his writing style, and in this case, I didn't like the story. But I did like Sally Lockhart - maybe credit there goes to Billie Pyper.
