Tryst...

I don't often recommend fanfic but I read a Jack/Ianto Torchwood fic yesterday that I thought was extraordinarily good. By someone I never heard of - [livejournal.com profile] rallalon, where have you been hiding? I liked the story on so many levels: for its sense of character and romance, and for its sense of plot and structure. And it hit a lot of my buttons. And it surprised me; not one of your cliche plots, but something delightfully different in a way that fits nicely with series canon.

The story is Tryst by [livejournal.com profile] rallalon.

[livejournal.com profile] rallalon is absolutely freaking brilliant. Go read as much of her stuff as you can. I adore her work, though it paradoxically leaves me depressed -- she pwns my feeble attempts at writing so thoroughly, I sometimes wonder why I bother . . . and since you're a writerly type yourself, I'm sure you understand what a heartfelt comment that is. ;) :D

I love that story. It's so beautiful, loving, and heartbreaking at the same time. I just re-read it to refresh my memory and I'm almost in tears (again) from how touching it is.

Yes, I'm certainly going to look for more [livejournal.com profile] rallalon stories. Does she usually post on [livejournal.com profile] torchwoodcoffee?

I adore rallalon's fic - she's written some DW that is among my all-time favorite stories. I hadn't realized she'd dabbled in TW. Even though I'm really not into J/I I'm very intrigued...

(From what I gather she's also ridiculously young - like freshly-minted college freshman young. It's beyond depressing. *g*)

I must find them! If you have any suggestions as to where I should look, I'm interested.

Well, I'm not really that much into Jack/Ianto for preference, either. But if all the stories were like this one, I probably would be!

Oh dear. I mean, on the one hand, that's just depressing and I'm jealous of her talent and skill. On the other hand, I'm happy to hear that there are people out there able to write like that, and will be doing so in future.

She's on Teaspoon under rallalon and it's a mixed bag of offerings. You can definitely see how she's grown as a writer but most of it is strong and beautifully written. My particular favorites are "A Non-Linear Love Story" (explores the D/R relationship through a very messed up time-travely lense) and "In Human Hands" which is dark and complicated (and sadly, still not finished) and takes the "Doctor Becomes Human" trope and gives it a spin. Her prose is delicious.

if all the stories were like this one, I probably would be!

I still haven't read it but I know what you mean. I read a sam_storyteller fic and felt the same way. Why aren't there more good Jack/Ianto fics?! I might be persuaded to join the team, you know?

And yes, it's depressing because OMG SO TALENTED!! but it's also exciting to see her develop and know that she's far from finished honing her skills.

Just to chime in - yes, [livejournal.com profile] rallalon is ridiculously talented (just turned 18). She can even get me to read something that has Ten in it (even if I don't exactly enjoy those parts, they're well done).

I'm not too sure where she posts on LJ, but her Teaspoon archive is here:

Her "Held At A Distance" series is a lovely AU take on the Doctor/Jack/Rose idea, and"Not a Love Story" is the best Jack/John piece I've ever read. I even recced the latter to my *mom* (not typically a slash fan), and she loved it! :D

I don't think I've thanked you for this link yet - thank you so much! What a treat, to have more stories available by a writer I like.

Is it undignified of me to whimper at that?

Wow!

I love the concept...

and "In Human Hands" which is dark and complicated (and sadly, still not finished)

Oh dear. I don't usually start reading unfinished things (and I only turn to WIPs when they're done) but I might be just too tempted there.

I read a sam_storyteller fic and felt the same way.

Another good one, yes, though I haven't read much of hers (yet) and must do something about that.

Why aren't there more good Jack/Ianto fics?! I might be persuaded to join the team, you know?

Exactly how I feel. A little good writing goes a long way. Even more, good ideas - those are what are really rare.
