I was pleased to see that the US Supreme Court has finally decided that what gays/lesbians do in their own homes is their own business, and will no longer be considered a criminal act(!) in any state. There was a huge article on the front page of the paper yesterday that this is a wake-up call to both political parties that they're going to have to take some sort of stand in the very near future re: the legalization of gay marriages, although it's a political hot potato and they'd just as soon sweep it under the rug - but at some point, they won't be able to. Within the past couple of days, Wal-Mart extended full marital benefits to same-sex partners; something like 80% of all of the top 100 corporations on the stock exchange now do so, so there is progress of a sort.
Good for Wal-Mart! And if their reputation in the U.S. is anything like their reputation here, they aren't exactly in the forefront of workers' rights.
It seems normal enough to me that the government lags behind on laws, and is constantly needing to catch up to the norms of society.
Funny, though, that so much of the popular media hasn't caught on yet.

LOL - from what I read, that's about right.
One thing that REALLY shocked me - a newspaper article saying that of all the major US TV networks, NBC, which airs Will & Grace(!) is the only one which doesn't offer same-sex couples all benefits. If I were involved (actor, writer, crew, etc.) with Will & Grace, or if I were a 'serious' fan of the show rather than the casual one I am, I'd feel like that was a real slap in the face from NBC. I still feel like it is....
