From bad to worse...
Dec. 23rd, 2004 10:02 pmI just did the quiz that
Now I'm not, on the whole, a huge Hobbit fan. It isn't that I don't like Hobbits, it's more that I find the Men in Middle-Earth (and some of the Elves) much more interesting (and sexy). But I love Pippin. I have loved Pippin since the fateful day I first read The Fellowship of the Ring on that memorable July day in a cottage near Pointe-au-Baril, Ontario. Pippin is my second favourite character in the trilogy, my favourite, of course, being Aragorn.
So I really, really wanted to get Pippin in the quiz. I tried to get Pippin. And who did I get? A bad trade. I can hardly bear to say it. Bilbo. Quite possibly my least favourite character in The Lord of the Rings. I'd rather have Grima Wormtongue or Shagrat.
Bilbo. Faugh.
I will now go and console myself with the company of Philip of Macedon.

Date: 2004-12-24 08:02 pm (UTC)What did you think of Bilbo in The Hobbit? Did you like him better than I did?
Interesting that The Hobbit makes more sense to you now. It has some great characters - I always think seeing Thranduil, King of Mirkwood is a hoot once you've got to know his son Legolas. (Now you know why Legolas can outdrink any dwarf?) I think my favourite character in The Hobbit is Smaug.

Date: 2004-12-26 01:40 pm (UTC)When I read the book the first time it was for a Children's Lit class at University. I remember my favourite character then being Bard, though as I re-read it this time I couldn't quite figure out why I had liked him so much; perhaps because I didn't have any other Tolkien men to compare him with *g* It was interesting, too, to see the early Gollum (and the seemingly innocent finding of the Ring), knowing the part they're going to play in the future. I think Thranduil and Denethor should get together and discuss child-rearing :-)
For my part, I liked Balin, one of the more level-headed and 'nice' dwarves, which makes what happens to him in Moria all the sadder. (I think somewhere I read a wonderful post-Hobbit Balin/Bilbo story which I'll have to find again...)

Date: 2004-12-26 02:59 pm (UTC)How nicely put! Tookishness is always good. I tolerated Bilbo at first - and I think Tolkien so obviously loves him it's rather endearing - but the more I read LOTR the more I found Bilbo annoying. Till the end. He's rather sweet at the very end, when he isn't sure what is what.
Bard sort of stands out in The Hobbit, where there aren't many men, and he's nicely strong, independent, and heroic. But you're right, he pales beside later men of Middle-Earth. (Anyone would.)
I think Thranduil and Denethor should get together
...Hmm, don't think I've seen this pairing...
and discuss child-rearing
And the ingratitude of the young!
If you find the Balin/Bilbo story, could you send me the URL?
