With some curiosity but with much less enthusiasm than with which I approached Alexander, the other night I saw Shaun of the Dead, which is "a romantic comedy with zombies". Right. I never saw a zombie movie before, and don't really care if I ever do again, but this one certainly did entertain. It was witty, clever, and had quite amazingly good performances by Simon Pegg as Shaun and Nick Frost as his deadbeat roommate. Kate Ashfield and Shaun's girlfriend was pretty good too, and it was a treat to see Bill Nighy again as Shaun's stepfather Philip, though it took me half the movie to recognize him. (He was the aging rock star in Love Actually).

I really want to see Shaun of the Dead, so I'm glad it was good.

It was, surprisingly so. Very sly and clever - along with the in-your-face gross-out zombie slapstick.

I loved Shaun!

Only recently saw Love Actually, and that was sweet. I'm not really a fan of Bill Nighy, but I think he was the best thing in that - even compared to Alan Rickman! And you know I'm all about the Rickman-love. Oh, if you want to see those two in another good film, I recommend Blow Dry. It's not great, but it's entertaining.

Yeah, wasn't Shaun a fun surprise?

As far as I know I haven't seen Bill Nighy in anything but that and Love Actually but he really made a strong impression on me in that one. It must have been an unusually well-written movie in many ways because it's the only movie in which I have ever liked Colin Firth. Thanks for the recommendation of Blow Dry - it's now on my ever-growing list of "stuff to see".

I'm glad to see that people who aren't necessarily afficionados of british/irish cult comedy still *get* Shaun of the Dead. A lot of the fun for us was seeing the likes of Simon Pegg and Dylan Moran on the big screen with an actual budget and stuff. Hvae you ever seen thier sitcoms at all? You need to see "Black Books" and "Spaced" if you possibly can.

I have never even heard of "Black Books" and "Spaced", though I like the sound of the titles. No, all those actors were new to me except Bill Nighy. What have I been missing?

You have a multi-region DVD player, right? Remind me to bring Spaced on Wednesday to lend to you -- I have both seasons, but they're British DVDs. Black Books is also very great, but I'm afraid I don't own it.

Have you ever seen Twitch City? If so, Spaced is very much a British version of that.

No, I haven't seen Twitch City. When it comes to TV, I'm hopeless.

Yes, I have a multi-region DVD player. Or at least... dual-region: it plays American and British DVDs.
