I wasn't paying much attention. I thought it was just me, having connection difficulties with Archive of our Own, when I went there looking for Avengers fic.
Turns out -
Such a nice site, and we ask so much of it. I feel I should send it a care package of blankets and cookies.
While I'm here, let me recomment
One of the things I've been noticing in the random Avengers fic I've been reading is that in a lot of the stories, the Avengers aren't Avengers. They're scientists who spend their time in the lab doing science, or S.H.I.E.L.D. aagents working for Nick Fury, doing whatever they do at home - "home" being Tony Stark's tower, usually, or his mansion. And, yes, they do that in the comic too, but in the comic (and for something like forty years of my lifetime of reading), they've always got a crisis going on, always have a supervillain attacking somewhere, or they're off somewhere in the Quinjet because the world needs them.... Not so much sitting at home eating toast and reading the newspaper.
Now, I see why people familiar with the Avengers from the movie alone would see this as the status quo and as the viable scenario they want to deal with. And that's okay. But I'd like a little more external action, myself.
Tempts me to write Avengers fic, it really does....
And if any other of you have recs - thanks to

Date: 2012-06-12 10:14 pm (UTC)I made a rec list of Steve/Tony fic written before the Avengers movie came out for someone else, if you want it. I'm not all that widely read though. Also, if you like Thor/Loki at all, you should read all of
I have absolutely no history with the Avengers outside the movies. The only Marvel comic I remember ever seeing in Swedish stores as a kid was Spider-Man. I had no idea Iron Man or Captain America (or indeed, the X-Men) existed before they became movies, and I think that's fairly typical. Apparently DC cornered our market? The only Avenger I actually have a long-term history with is the Hulk, from the old Bill Bixby tv-series, and I think that shows in how much I'm attached to him - and, of course, there are lots of things there that appeal to me, with the duality of Banner's nature, and the uncontrolled physical transformations, et cetera. The fic I produce in this fandom is going to reflect that immensely, I think.
But, anyway, my point is that I'm one of those fans who is really not up to dealing with comics canon, because there's just too much of it, and I like everything just the way it is in the movies. That said, though, of course fic involving actual world-saving adventures would be amazing. But it's so much harder to write, what with the plot aspects. I think we'll be seeing some of those, too, though, once people have time to actually write them. *crosses fingers*

Date: 2012-06-12 10:35 pm (UTC)It isn't that I want Avengers canon in fanfic... it's just that it felt strange to see the Avengers being idle. And domestic. Not really strange in a bad way, just... unnatural. I expect them to be always travelling, or in the middle of interplanetary wars. (Of which, come to think of it, the movie is a good example.)
I think in the long run having more people on AO3 will probably be a good thing, for both selection and quality. But it does feel like an 'all at once' thing, and I'm sure having a big new shiny popular fandom is part of it.
I saw some of the old Bill Bixby TV series, and liked it. Fond memories. But now Mark Ruffalo is just so good I think he has driven all previous versions of the Hulk out of my brain.

Date: 2012-06-12 11:08 pm (UTC)Mark Ruffalo blows my mind. I was expecting him to be excellent, but he and Whedon hit it so completely out of the park. And then his interplay with RDJ... Ngh. I feel like I always had an affinity for Bruce Banner and the Hulk, but this movie realized the full potential of the character to a degree that turned me truly fannish about him for the first time. I want all the fic about him, now, and especially about him and Tony, and I want to write a lot of that fic. And it's great to be fannish in that way about a character and a pairing that other people are into, as well. I think I really needed a major fandom again.
